More than a dozen Gassho-zukuri huts are enclosed together to form a paid area, and some of them can be visited inside the Gassho-zukuri. When you come to Shirakawa-go, you must go up to this observatory to have a look. It takes about 20 minutes to reach the observatory, and it is quite tiring because it is an uphill section. When you are about to start climbing, you will see a signboard for Gassho Village Cultural Center. Halfway through the walk, I was sweating all over. Fortunately, there were many shade trees to cover me. There were many scenery worth taking photos along the way. Finally, we arrived at the observatory. This is really a great view. The best place to see Gassho Village is here, Gassho Village Observation Deck. It is worth it to see this beautiful scenery after walking up hard and sweating. The whole village is like a fairyland. There is also a memorial plaque here to keep as a souvenir. What is even more lovely is that there are bamboo hats that can be worn for taking photos. A short walk from Shirakawa-go Bus Terminal, across the bridge over the river, you will find the Shirakawa-go Gassho-zukuri Minkaen. Admission is 600 yen. There are several Gassho-zukuri houses gathered here, and most of them can be entered. Inside, you can enjoy a variety of things, such as preserved old-time appearances and museum-like features. You will need to take your shoes off when entering the houses, but since you will be taking them off frequently, I recommend wearing shoes that are easy to take off. There is a lot to see, and I felt it was good value for money. Shirakawa-go Gassho Village is a traditional Japanese rural building that combines two building materials into a crossed triangle shape and uses straw and reeds to cover the roof. The thatched houses are tall and narrow, with steeply pitched roofs to prevent them from collapsing under heavy snow in winter. This was invented by local villagers to cope with heavy snow. It was first built between the Edo and Showa periods. Each house is a masterpiece of carpentry, with no nails at all, and the beam slots fit tightly together, forming a whole. There are not many Gassho-zukuri settlements like this one left in Japan. It is now a world cultural heritage.
