The South Gate has a visitor center and an escalator, and is more lively. The North Gate is quieter. The ancient town is about 3 km long, with 1.5 km of old stone streets. The town is known for its stilted buildings, sloped roofs, and small blue tiles. The bluestone streets have slopes, and there is a more comfortable path along the river. You can walk along the river from north to south, then take the escalator up to the commercial street. We recommend staying overnight in the ancient town. Most guesthouses have river views, and the town is beautiful in the morning and evening. The ancient town has many slopes, so wear comfortable shoes and avoid bringing a suitcase, as it can be very tiring. Wuge Fish Restaurant near the South Gate is one of the best restaurants in terms of views, as it has a large, unobstructed outdoor terrace dining area. During the Spring Festival, various festive activities are held, such as the Five Blessings Gods Parade, guessing lantern riddles, Sichuan Opera face-changing, and bonfire parties. Perhaps due to the summer season, there are few people and it is very quiet. Although it is hot during the day, there is a strong breeze from the river, and it cools down in the evening. The Wujiang River has beautiful scenery, appearing blue-green from afar and emerald green up close, presenting different layers of colors under the sunlight. 🚗Transportation and parking: We drove there, and there is a mountain road before reaching Gongtan, but it is relatively easy to navigate. There are parking lots at both the north and south gates, so you can choose the nearest one based on your accommodation location. Entry to the ancient town is free, and the parking fee is only 2 yuan per night, which is very reasonable. Accommodation: Most of the inns are stilted buildings facing the Wujiang River, with restaurants on the lower level and accommodations on the upper level. We chose a stilted building with a balcony, where we could sit and watch the Wujiang River flow right in front of us. The room was simple but very clean. Cuisine: Many restaurants in Gongtan serve spicy pepper fish, and we had a delicious one at our innkeeper's place. We also tried noodles and ice powder at another shop, which were not particularly tasty, but the shop owners were honest, and the pine nut cakes we encountered were quite good. 🚫The not-so-good: Although the place is lovely, there were some negative experiences. The Wujiang River cruise boat took an hour to board, and after boarding, they said there would be a performance, but it turned out to be a live calligraphy auction on the boat. Well, we just wanted to enjoy the scenery of the Wujiang River. However, the overall experience in Gongtan is still worth a visit. Although the ancient town is commercialized, it is well-managed with an authentic atmosphere, inhabited almost entirely by locals. It is not like some internet-famous ancient towns that are full of the smell of commerce; you can rest assured when visiting. Regarding the Wujiang River Gallery boat ride, the regular ticket is 150 yuan, round trip for one hour. Personally, I think the scenery is nice, similar to the Lesser Three Gorges, but the price is seriously overpriced and not worth it. You can buy boat tickets from local innkeepers for as low as 100 yuan, or even less. Public transportation: Take the long-distance bus from Chongqing Sigongli Bus Station to Pengshui Chengbei Bus Station (buses depart approximately every hour and the journey takes 3 hours). After arriving, take the bus to Youyang and get off at Gongtan. I guess there aren't many buses, so if you miss one, I suggest taking the bus from Pengshui Bus Station. In addition, I do not recommend taking the bus from Youyang to Gongtan, as this would be backtracking and add at least two more hours. Accommodation: It's probably expensive during holidays, but not on regular weekends; you can find decent places for just over a hundred yuan, while better ones will cost over 200 or 300 yuan. I chose Guo's Inn, which has the most beautiful view, visible from both sides. The corridor is great for taking pictures, with no dead angles. The downside is that the accommodation is average, but since my main focus was photography, it was an irreplaceable choice, and the accommodation conditions were secondary. Food: The biggest disappointment is the lack of delicious food; I guess it's just home cooking. The fish is not bad, though. There's also local mung bean jelly, which is okay.
