The Ustyurt Plateau lies in Mangistau Oblast, facing the Caspian Sea in western Kazakhstan. Ancient strata from the Cretaceous period, the age of dinosaurs, remain exposed, and endless chalk earth and palace-like sculptures of the earth spread out before you. This is one of the top five most impressive spots in the history of the world. It is no exaggeration to say that it is the Grand Canyon of the West. It is truly a hidden place! When I visited in 2013, it was not developed as a tourist destination at all, but it seems to have improved a bit in recent years, and there are more local tours. The Ustyurt Plateau is also located on the Uzbekistan side, and it lies across the border to be precise. I visited the Ustyurt Plateau in Mangystau Region, Kazakhstan, a country still largely unknown to many people. I joined a one-day tour from the city of Aktau. I bought a one-way ticket from Japan to Almaty, which cost 60,000 yen. From Almaty to Aktau, I took a domestic flight with Air Astana, which cost 13,000 yen. ⚫︎The cost for a one-day tour visiting three locations was about $100. The main attraction, "Boszhira," was the most breathtaking scenery I have ever seen in my life! I hope to camp there again someday.
