It was founded by the great monk Uisang of Silla. It was called Gounsa, which means high-rising clouds, but it is said that Choi Chi-won built Gaheoru and Uhwaru while staying there and renamed the temple after Choi Chi-won's nickname, Goun.
It was called the best Jijang Doryang in the East because it was a place of Jijang Bosal's spiritual power.
It is said that because of this, there is a story that when you die and go to the afterlife, King Yeomra asks if you have been to Gounsa.
There is a painting of Jijang Bosal at Gounsa, and the 10 Kings of Yeomra are enshrined in the Hall of the Underworld. Treasure No. 246, Seated Stone Buddha.
It is a must-see, so before you die, stop by Gounsa Temple to see Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva...
