The church was built to commemorate the Danish theologian, writer, and poet Grundtvig. Because the exterior of the church resembles an organ, locals affectionately call it the 'Organ Church.' The church was designed by the famous Danish designer Jensen Klint. The interior of the church is typically Gothic but without any decorations, which helps to highlight the verticality of Gothic architecture.
