If you want to truly feel the essence of Korean tradition, Jeonju is the place. This charming city blends history, food, art, and architecture in a way that feels both timeless and alive. I came to Jeonju for a weekend and left with memories that felt like stepping into a living painting.
The heart of the experience? Jeonju Hanok Village. With over 700 traditional Korean houses (hanok), the village is a gorgeous maze of sloping tiled roofs, quiet alleys, and wooden guesthouses. I stayed in a hanok for the full experience—sleeping on a heated ondol floor, sipping tea in a private courtyard, and wearing a hanbok to wander the village like a character from a historical drama.
Jeonju isn’t just beautiful—it’s the food capital of Korea. This is the birthplace of bibimbap, and no place does it better. I had mine in a rustic restaurant with brassware dishes and handmade gochujang that gave it a rich, smoky kick. The Jeonju Nambu Market is also a food lover’s dream—try the choco pies, mung bean pancakes, and makgeolli (rice wine) tastings.
For culture lovers, the Gyeonggijeon Shrine, which houses the portrait of King Taejo (founder of the Joseon Dynasty), is serene and steeped in history. The nearby Jeonju Crafts Exhibition Hall showcases pottery, calligraphy, and traditional Korean paper art. You can even join a short class to make your own souvenir!
Evenings in Jeonju are magical. Lanterns light the hanok alleys, and street performers fill the air with soft music. It’s not loud or flashy—just soulful, nostalgic, and beautiful.
