Tokyo Hakusan Shrine | A Stunning Hydrangea Spectacle
If you're planning to admire hydrangeas in Tokyo, Hakusan Shrine is a must-visit!
Located in Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo, this shrine boasts over 1,000 years of history. Though small in size, it is a paradise for hydrangea lovers, with 3,000 hydrangea plants of various species adorning the shrine grounds and its adjacent garden. Every June, during the rainy season, the hydrangeas here burst into bloom. Delicate pinks, refreshing blues, and pure whites create a vibrant sea of colors, bringing life and beauty to the otherwise gloomy season.
The shrine also hosts an annual Hydrangea Festival, featuring traditional music performances, goldfish scooping, handicraft exhibitions, and stalls selling hydrangea-themed accessories and postcards. Best of all, the shrine is open 24 hours and offers free admission!
To get there, take the Toei Mita Line and alight at Hakusan Station. A short walk will lead you to the shrine. Strolling through the grounds, you might encounter adorable heart-shaped hydrangeas or sunbathing cats—truly a healing experience. Don’t miss this romantic early summer event!

Tokyo's June hydrangea sanctuary: a guide to transportation
#TokyoTrafficStrategy
Every June, Tokyo is painted a dreamy blue and purple by the blooming hydrangeas. This seasonal romance is definitely not to be missed! The following is a detailed transportation guide for the three major hydrangea check-in spots to help you easily reach your dream garden.
🌸 Hakusan Shrine (Bunkyo Ward)
As a favorite flower-viewing spot for Tokyo locals, the torii gates, stone steps and cascading sea of flowers at Hakusan Shrine are like walking into a scene from a Hayao Miyazaki animation.
Transportation: Take the Tokyo Metro Namboku Line to Tokyo Medical University Station, exit from Exit 1 and walk for about 5 minutes to the destination; or take the Toei Oedo Line to Ushigome Kagurazaka Station, transfer to a bus and get off at Hakusan Jinja-mae. It is recommended to go early in the morning on weekdays to avoid the crowds and capture the best light.
🌸 Hasedera Temple (Kamakura)
Kamakura's ancient temples and hydrangea slopes complement each other. After checking in, you can also stroll along the seaside and experience the Enoden electric railway.
Transportation: Take the JR Yokosuka Line from Tokyo Station to Kamakura Station, then take the Enoden Railway to Hase Station. It is an 8-minute walk from the station. Alternatively, take the Odakyu Romancecar from Shinjuku Station to Fujisawa Station and transfer to the Enoden Railway.
🌸 Meigetsu-in Temple (North Kamakura)
Mingyueyuan is known as the "Hydrangea Temple" and its blue and purple flower wall are great photos in any shot.
Transportation: Take the Enoden Railway from Kamakura Station to Kita-Kamakura Station, then walk for about 10 minutes. It is recommended to wear light-colored clothing such as white, beige, and blue, which will complement the sea of flowers.
