Food in Kyoto: Kawadoko Nagashi Somen by Kifune Shrine.
👍️Recommended store:
Hirobun (next to Kifune Shrine, you can refer to the previous note to get there)
🕐️Recommended time:
11:00–15:00 (from May to the end of September every year)
🌟Highlights:
① Line up to pay and get a number (a fan is used as a number plate). Check the small blackboard outside the store first. When "please go down" appears with the number on the fan, you can go down the stairs and continue to wait. There is also a small blackboard downstairs, which is divided into a waiting area and a seating area. The waiter will call the number.
② Each group of guests will be assigned a waterway, so you won't eat other people's saliva. The food provided is somen, dashi soy sauce (wasabi on the side of the bowl), matcha warabi mochi, and finally pink somen. The noodles are served a little fast, so it is recommended to prepare in advance if you want to take photos or videos. When the pink perilla-flavored noodles appear, it means the meal is over. It takes about 15 minutes to finish the meal.
💰️Average price:
JPY 2,000/person
💗Other tips:
① The whole store is divided into two parts. The queue on the right is for nagashi somen, and the queue on the left is for kawadoko cuisine (kaiseki or set meal, reservation required). If you really can't eat nagashi somen and want to try kawadoko cuisine, you can either find a relatively cheap set meal for about JPY 5,000 (the form of food is more important than the taste), or you can go further up to try the kawadoko coffee and dessert shop at the top.
② It is recommended to queue up for a number before 10:30, as the numbers will stop being issued for the day at around 13:00. The earlier you get a number, the less it will affect your afternoon itinerary. After paying and getting a fan, the waiter will tell you the approximate waiting time. You need to take off your shoes in the waiting area. But please follow the rules and ethics, and don't soak your feet in the water.
③ It is recommended to queue up to pay when you arrive at Kifune Shrine, and then come back after visiting the surrounding area. Even if you miss the number, you can eat after waiting for only one round if you come back late.
