We found a one-day tour to Hoh Xil on Ctrip. The driver started picking people up at 8am, and after everyone was together we set off for the final destination, the Hoh Xil Conservation Station. It was so beautiful passing by Kunlun Pass along the way. The driver drove very steadily and had a sharp eye, but he was a little dull and didn't talk much. Later he succumbed to our handsome offensive. The vastness of Hoh Xil is apparent. It was all thanks to the sharp eyes of our guide and fellow tour members that we spotted many wild animals (all were far from the road, so a telephoto lens was needed). The driver said there was a car accident, which is very normal in the peak season, so before departure, they would ask if we needed to catch the train after the trip. They didn’t dare to take us if we were in a hurry because there was only one main road that was blocked and there was no way to deal with it. After about half an hour of traffic jam, the driver took us on an off-road route (fortunately, he was a local driver and very familiar with it. For the same price, we also experienced the off-road project, which was very bumpy). In the end, we returned to the city only an hour later than the itinerary, and the large trucks on the road were stuck for dozens of kilometers...

Book a car in advance and contact the driver a day before to arrange the pick-up time and location. At 8:30 am, the driver will pick you up and head to Kunlun Holy Spring. Before that, you will pass through the Kunlun Mountain Gate at an altitude of 2780 meters. In front of you are rolling snow-capped mountains. Take a photo here to commemorate the majestic Kunlun Mountains before entering. After driving for a while, you will pass through the Qinghai-Tibet Highway Checkpoint. You need to take a full-face photo and record it. When you return, get off the car and swipe your ID card for verification. All scenic spots in Kekexili are free. You need to swipe your ID card at the highway checkpoint, so bring it with you! After passing the checkpoint, you will officially enter the Qinghai-Tibet Highway. There are many large trucks on the road. The driver drives steadily and cares about whether we have altitude sickness and how to deal with it. First stop: Kunlun Holy Spring When the car reaches an altitude of 3700 meters, you will arrive at the Kunlun Holy Spring. You can park your car and go to the water room to see the Kunlun Holy Spring. It is a very large well. Many people bring large bottles or buckets to take water back to drink. The driver said that this water is good for people, so let us also take some to drink. However, we did not bring water bottles to prevent going to the toilet. There is a tourist toilet on the far right, but we did not go there. It looks a bit like a dry toilet. However, there is a place that looks like a guesthouse in the middle, and the toilet inside is very clean. You can go in and use the toilet! Second stop: Wuji Dragon and Phoenix Palace After using the toilet, drive to an altitude of 3800 meters and arrive at the Wuji Dragon and Phoenix Palace. It is backed by Kunlun Mountain and there are many jade stones on the mountain. Mining is no longer allowed. The driver told us that if you are a Buddhist believer, you can go in and pay your respects. The statue worshipped is that of Jiang Ziya. Many people bring offerings or donate incense money. We did not go in. The visitor center is a dry toilet, so we only took a photo of the gate and continued to the next stop. Third stop: Yuzhu Peak Observation Deck Under the continuous snow-capped mountains is the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. Many people stop by the roadside and take photos on the hillside. However, the driver told us that it is more beautiful and safer to drive forward to the Yuzhu Peak Observation Deck and take photos. You can see the whole picture. After reaching Yuzhu Peak at an altitude of 4200 meters, park your car and do not go down from the gate next to the camel model. You cannot get to the observation deck. From the right side of the parking lot, go straight through a small door. There will be vendors selling jade who enter the observation deck from the door next to it. Fourth stop: Kekexili Not far from the Yuzhu Peak Observation Deck, you will see many wild donkeys. The driver said that wild donkeys are very strong and fast, running at 80 miles per hour. Sometimes cars cannot catch up. When the altitude reaches 4768 meters, we arrive at the Kunlun Pass and officially enter Kekexili. I first came to know Hoh Xil possibly through director Lu Chuan's movie 'Kekexili', which tells the story of the brave battle and sacrifice of the mountain patrol team members against poachers, and this is adapted from a real event. In the 1990s, poaching of Tibetan antelopes in Hoh Xil was rampant, and Sonam Darge, then Deputy Secretary of the Zhiduo County Committee, sacrificed his own life to protect the Tibetan antelopes. It can be said that Hoh Xil is the ultimate dream destination of my life. This is the largest, highest-altitude, and most biodiverse nature reserve in our country, filled with mystery, and in recent years, it has also attracted many challengers. Hoh Xil Nature Reserve is part of the Sanjiangyuan National Park and was listed as a World Heritage Site in 2017. Currently, illegal crossing in Hoh Xil is explicitly prohibited. 🚩How to get there: Depart from Golmud, you need to drive along the Kunlun Mountains, passing by the Kunlun Holy Spring - Wuji Dragon and Phoenix Palace - Yuzhu Peak and then to the Sonam Darge Conservation Station. The moment the ancestor of ten thousand mountains appeared before my eyes, I couldn't help but marvel at the grandeur of the Kunlun Mountains. Majestic and fortunate to have captured with my eyes the beloved snow-capped Mount Yuzhu, standing at 6178 meters, resembling a lovely girl. Suddenly, I thought of a phrase: 'While everyone heads to the sea, I alone turn to the mountains.' How lucky we are. Traveling with a military convoy tens of kilometers long into the Hoh Xil, we kept a tacit distance and used our turn signals kindly. The beautiful legend is actually a forbidden zone for human life. The grasslands at an altitude of over 4700 meters are a free paradise for all creatures, though I didn't encounter the Tibetan antelopes I longed for, I did come across other adorable animals. The bumpy permafrost highway and the distant Qinghai-Tibet Railway, built by road workers challenging human limits with their lives, left me, who gets dizzy and freezes as soon as I step out of the car and can only breathe oxygen throughout the journey, with nothing to offer but silent salutes and prayers for a lifetime of peace and health. Standing at the source of the Yangtze, Yellow, and Lancang Rivers, I couldn't help but marvel at the magic and greatness of nature. The small streams that eventually become the life-nurturing Yangtze River, the scenes of Sicily from my childhood 'Animal World' and 'Man and Nature' are still vivid in my memory. Now, having the fortune to be here, I am filled with emotion. Life is like this, reminiscing while continuing, never willing to truly stop. I used to like Da Bing's books a lot, and there's a line in his song, 'Accompany me to Hoh Xil to see the sea, I don't want the future, just you to come.' The sunset is gorgeous, the night sky is clear, and the Milky Way is brilliant, striking the soul with desolation and grandeur! Mars Camp, this is the place on Earth that least resembles Earth. May in Qinghai is the off-season for tourism. Even during the May Day holiday, the airfare is not very expensive. Hotels that cost over a thousand a night in the peak season can be enjoyed for just over 300 at this time. One of the advantages of off-season travel is the fewer people, without the surging crowds of the peak season, the experience is greatly improved. Every year in June and July in Kekexili, it is said that you can often see the figure of the plateau elf-Tibetan antelope on the Gobi Desert on both sides of the road. Unfortunately, Green Luo didn't encounter them on this trip to Kekexili. According to the driver, the Tibetan antelopes in early May have run to other places to give birth. Tibetan antelopes inhabit the desert meadow plateau and plateau grassland at an altitude of 4,600-6,000 meters, especially like the flat grass beach near the water source. The area where the Tibetan antelopes live is 1600 km from east to west, and seasonal migration is an important ecological feature.
