Mountain City Ipoh, the beauty of a tranquil small town
The first time you hear about Ipoh, it might be because of Michelle Yeoh.
Getting to know Ipoh again might be because of 'Anna and the King.'
This time, I finally came to this mountain city in Malaysia. Although it is not large, it has a very comfortable atmosphere, tranquil and serene.
Transportation:
There are direct buses from Kuala Lumpur to Ipoh, about a 3-hour drive.
The travel time from Ipoh to Penang is about 2 hours by car.
Finally arriving in Ipoh, I feel the charm of this mountain city. It is the fourth largest city in Malaysia, but it still has a tranquil feeling.
Must-visit spots:
Ipoh Railway Station:
Known as the 'Taj Mahal of Malaysia,' this railway station is a European-style building with white exterior walls. The historical architecture is part of Ipoh's memory.
The Ipoh City Council building across the street is also worth a visit.
Concubine Lane and Second Concubine Lane:
The Chinese community in Ipoh used to live here, and now it has become a very artistic neighborhood.
You can find many murals here, from white coffee to paper airplanes, which have now become symbols of Ipoh.
There are many traditional snacks here, from egg tarts to pastries, and traditional tofu pudding, all of which are must-try delicacies.
Ipoh Cuisine:
The most famous is Bean Sprout Chicken,
Bean Sprout Chicken is somewhat similar to Hainanese chicken rice, with tender chicken and locally grown bean sprouts that are plump, crisp, and juicy.
You can also have a bowl of chicken soup rice noodles, with soft and smooth rice noodles absorbing the sweet chicken soup, very delicious.
(This time I ate at Wong Kee, a very famous local restaurant, and it did not disappoint.)
White Coffee:
Ipoh's most famous delicacy, white coffee is made in a way that it has no bitter or astringent taste, very fragrant and smooth.
tips:
1. Transportation in Ipoh city mainly relies on taxis.
2. This visit to Ipoh was quite rushed; there are other attractions that I didn't have time to visit. It is recommended to spend 1 to 2 days touring Ipoh.
3. There are many Chinese residents in the local area, and you can basically communicate in Chinese.

Malaysia Penang Ipoh Cameron Highlands Tour
Georgetown in Penang, Ipoh Old Town and Cameron Highlands are all very close to the attractions and easy to travel. If you want to go to a remote place, you can call a taxi, which is quite convenient. Many people can speak Chinese and Mandarin. In terms of food, there are Chinese, Western, Malay and Indian styles, all very international. I prefer Ipoh, which has small town scenery, mountains and water, and strong human touch.
A visit to Ipoh is incomplete without exploring Concubine Lane, a charming street that mixes heritage with modern creativity. My day started at 粮家 (Liang Jia), a cozy dessert shop known for its delicious, local-inspired treats. The minimalist decor and beautifully crafted desserts made it the perfect spot to kick off the adventure.
Next, I visited BookXcess, a hidden gem located in a restored heritage building. Surrounded by books and rustic brick walls, it was a peaceful place to relax and unwind before continuing my journey.
The street itself is a photographer's dream, with vibrant murals, vintage shopfronts, and local snacks everywhere. After soaking in the sights, I ended my visit with a stop at Chloe Café. With its pastel interiors and relaxing atmosphere, it was the perfect place to enjoy a beautifully plated dessert and a coffee, wrapping up the day in the most delightful way.
Concubine Lane is a must-visit in Ipoh, offering a wonderful blend of history, culture, and modern dining spots. It’s the ideal place to explore, relax, and indulge in local flavors.

Sweet Stops & Street Art — Ipoh’s Hidden Café Finds
Ipoh is more than just a pit stop — it’s a food and culture haven that rivals Penang. Strolling through the charming lanes of Market Lane and Concubine Lane, you’ll find vibrant street murals, nostalgic architecture, and hidden gems around every corner.
During our mural walk, we took a break at Girlie Café, a cozy spot with a warm heritage feel and homemade pastries that truly impressed. The standout was the lemon butter cake — moist, tangy, and possibly one of the best we’ve had. We also tried the matcha kouign amann and cherry cake, both rich in flavor and beautifully baked.
Whether you’re exploring for art or indulging in local eats, Ipoh’s old town delivers the perfect blend of culture and comfort — and Girlie Café is definitely worth the stop.

Ipoh offers a perfect mix of old-world charm, delicious food, and nature spots
I recently visited Ipoh, Malaysia, and it was an unexpectedly charming getaway. Tucked between KL and Penang, Ipoh offers a perfect mix of old-world charm, delicious food, and nature spots — all without the big-city chaos.
Highlights:
• Food Heaven: The food scene is amazing. From silky smooth Ipoh hor fun to the famous white coffee at Nam Heong, every meal was a treat. Lou Wong’s bean sprout chicken definitely lived up to the hype.
• Cultural Spots: I loved walking around the old town — colonial buildings, street art, and quirky cafes gave it a cool, nostalgic vibe. The Concubine Lane was touristy but still worth a stroll.
• Nature & Caves: Kek Lok Tong and Perak Cave Temple were both stunning. The limestone hills surrounding the city make for a picturesque backdrop. We also squeezed in a morning at the Lost World of Tambun — great for families or a chill soak in the hot springs.
Overall: Ipoh is low-key but full of character. It’s perfect for a weekend trip, especially if you’re into food, history, and a slower pace. I’d go again — probably just for the salted chicken and white coffee alone!

3rd Wife Street 怡保三奶巷
#malaysiatrip
Highly instagrammable place that is great for photo shoots. Beautiful street murals. Literally it’s called 3rd wife street(三奶巷) in Chinese. This small alley is going to be my memory for Ipoh old town, because when i arrived in Ipoh Old town, this is the first mural art I've seen. It still maintains most of the traditional look and not commercialize yet. Highly recommended!
