After walking through Miyajima, we arrived at Senjokaku, a large wooden space where the wind can pass through. This is also a wooden shrine built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi during the Momoyama period. As the name suggests, it is incredibly spacious, and just sitting on the floor and looking at the sea is soothing. Looking up at the ceiling, you can see votive plaques and paintings that have been donated! Apparently, this building has been unfinished for over 400 years... It was a mysterious place where time flows slowly, surrounded by the quiet air and warmth of wood. It is located on a slight hill, so the Seto Inland Sea can be seen beautifully from there, and it was very soothing! It would be a pity to only visit Iwashima Shrine when you go to Miyajima. There is a Senjokaku on the hillside. It is the size of 857 たたみ, so it is called Senjokaku. It is made entirely of wood and is the largest wooden building in Miyajima. It looks a bit like Kiyomizu-dera Temple. From Senjokaku you can enjoy a beautiful view of the sea. The story begins with Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who in 1587 ordered the official monk Ankokuji Keiji to build a large sutra hall and recite sutras a thousand times every month to pray for the souls of the soldiers who lost their lives in the war. But later Toyotomi Hideyoshi died suddenly and the construction was suspended. More than 400 years have passed and it has still not been completed. It should be an unfinished building today, but it has formed its unique charm. Not only is the top of the shrine still unfinished, the ceiling is also in an unfinished state. But in the Edo period, Senjokaku was already a place for officials and celebrities to socialize and cool off. On the large pillars inside, there are engraved the names of Kabuki actors from the Edo period and the name of the Thousand Dragon Tree. There are also many paintings with historical traces hanging on the wall. The Great Torii: A Legendary Landmark Standing in the Sea Itsukushima Shrine's Great Torii gate stands approximately 16.6 meters tall, weighs about 60 tons, has a roof spanning 24.2 meters, and boasts main pillars with a circumference of 9.9 meters. It's crafted from natural camphor wood. The current Great Torii, rebuilt in 1875, is the eighth iteration. It stands firm against the ocean currents, a silent witness to the passage of time and history. Five-Storied Pagoda: A Stunning Fusion of Japanese and Tang Dynasty Architecture This 28-meter-tall five-storied pagoda, built in 1407, ingeniously blends Japanese and Chinese Tang Dynasty architectural techniques. Toyokuni Shrine (Senjokaku): An Unfinished Historical Dream Toyokuni Shrine, also known as "Senjokaku" (Hall of One Thousand Mats), is a Buddhist temple commissioned by Toyotomi Hideyoshi to honor those who died in war. Built in the "hip-and-gable roof" style, it was left unfinished due to Hideyoshi's death, leaving behind a poignant historical tale. Daisho-in Temple and Daigan-ji Temple: A Profound Legacy of Religious Culture Daisho-in Temple, the head temple of the Omuro school of Shingon Buddhism, oversaw the rituals of Itsukushima Shrine before the Meiji Restoration and is a renowned temple on Miyajima. Daigan-ji Temple, responsible for the construction and maintenance of Itsukushima Shrine, shares the island's religious and cultural memory.
