#KagoshimaTourism I went to Yakushima, a remote island in Kagoshima, to see Jomon Cedar, a mountain cedar that I had always wanted to see in my life. I left at 4am and walked through the great outdoors for 5.5 hours each way. I walked along a long, long trolley road and climbed a 3km mountain path before finally seeing it. The journey was really, really tough and I wanted to give up many times, but the moment I saw Jomon Cedar, all my fatigue disappeared. I was simply moved and felt a sense of accomplishment. I don't think I'll go again (for now), but I'm glad I tried. I really respect the fact that there are people who participate in this climb even in their 70s. Yakushima was the first Japanese site to be registered as a World Heritage Site in 1993. The Jomon Cedar, a symbol of Yakushima, is said to be 4,000 years old... 😳 The Jomon Cedar Climbing Course is the most popular trekking course on Yakushima 🙌 It takes about 5 hours one way from the Arakawa trailhead to Jomon Cedar. The journey is about 11km. The feature of this course is that you can trek while admiring various Yaku Cedar trees that are over several thousand years old. In addition to Jomon Cedar, you can experience impressive Yaku Cedar trees such as Wilson Stump, Daio Cedar, and Meoto Cedar, making this a course full of attractions. Yaku Cedars grow slowly, producing six times as much resin as cedars on the mainland, in order to adapt to rainy environments. This makes them less likely to rot and are thought to live longer. This amount of rain is what creates the majestic Yaku Cedar forest. In order to protect the Jomon Cedars, unfortunately you can only view them from the observation deck and cannot touch them directly! I visited the famous Jomon Sugi in Yakushima, Kagoshima Prefecture! It was something I had always wanted to see, and it was truly moving. I woke up at 3:30 in the morning and took a bus to the Arakawa Trailhead bus stop. From there, I walked along the tracks where trolleys run, taking about 5 hours to reach Jomon Sugi. With a guide providing breaks and explanations, it might take around 4 hours if you walk briskly. The Jomon Sugi I saw was absolutely massive! It's said that it would take 10 adult men holding hands to encircle its trunk, and it was indeed incredibly thick and large—truly astonishing. I also came across the Wilson Stump, a heart-shaped tree stump, which was adorable. We rested by the river, learned a lot about Yakusugi trees, and enjoyed a 10-hour round-trip trekking experience. If your legs and back are in good health, I highly recommend visiting!

The trolley road that you walk on in the first half of the trek to Jomon Cedar is characterized by its unique scenery and ease of walking, and you can enjoy the nature of Yakushima at a leisurely pace. After walking along the trolley road for about two hours, you will connect to the full-scale hiking trail to Wilson Stump and Jomon Cedar. Wilson Stump is also one of the highlights along the way, and it was also very impressive. When you enter the stump, you have a strange feeling as if you are surrounded by a sacred space. The trekking itself is quite hard, and it took about 10 hours round trip. There are many mountain paths and tree roots along the way, but the natural scenery is wonderful, and just walking through the forest is soothing. There are streams and old bridges along the way, and the scenery is varied, so you never get bored. We recommend that you prepare well beforehand. A very primitive place, the only drawback is inconvenient transportation. It's impossible to visit all the attractions on the island in one day. There are just too many sights on this small island. The most famous are several hiking trails. I took the Jomon Sugi and Shiratani Unsuikyo trails. The moss forest in Shiratani Unsuikyo is the location for the film Princess Mononoke. The experience is ordinary when you are there. If you go further into the forest to Taiko-iwa Rock, the view is better. The Jomon Sugi trail is 22km round trip, suitable for those who are very confident in their physical strength. Because the bus ends early, but hiking takes at least 10 hours, so I hired a guide at the time. But actually, there are paths in the forest, so you don't have to worry about getting lost in it. So people who walk fast can save the cost of hiring a guide.

I went on a tour to Jomon Sugi, which is one of the things I want to do while I'm alive! The tour guide came to pick me up by bus at 4am and we started climbing at 6am. It took 12 hours to walk, 6 hours each way! Unlike Mt. Fuji, we didn't climb many slopes, but even though the road was flat, walking for 12 hours was very tough. There were many photo spots before we reached Jomon Sugi, so we enjoyed the walk 😊 I still can't forget the taste of the natural spring water I filled up with a plastic bottle and drank when it was hot and thirsty. And when I saw Jomon Sugi with my own eyes, I was captivated by the mystical beauty that I can't put into words. I still treasure the photo from that time, and I use it as my smartphone wallpaper. Looking back, it was a tough 12 hours, but I'm really glad I was able to see Jomon Sugi with my bare eyes! If you come to Yakushima, you should go there at least once! Trekking to Jomon Cedar✨ I applied for a tour and participated alone~ If you have the physical strength, you can do the trekking, and the flat roads are much longer than the ups and downs. [What to bring] If you search for "Jomon Cedar Trekking" or "Trekking", you will find most of the things you need to bring, but I think that if you have "rain gear", you will be able to manage at the very least~^_^ I have experience in mountain climbing, so I wore hiking boots, but since there are many flat roads, it was not necessarily an environment where trekking shoes were required, but if you are afraid of slipping, I recommend trekking shoes. [Tour] I went with about 8 people who I didn't know! There were quite a few tours, but I booked a very famous one. The downside is that although I had looked at the reviews of the tour itself, it was hard to know who would be the guide, so it depended on the guide you got... I recommend joining a tour with a well-established guide💦 Also, I couldn't recommend the tour to people with experience, as they adjust their pace to match those who are slower, so it feels a bit boring. There were quite a lot of people who participated individually, but since I was participating alone, I was worried about even reaching the entrance to the mountain of Jomon Cedar, so I decided to join a tour! The broken neck mackerel sashimi is a must! For the Jomon Sugi trekking, we asked a guide to take us on a mountain bus at 5am, started around 6am, and returned around 5pm.
