Visited Kamikochi on October 27, 2024, by booking a direct bus ticket from Matsumoto at 5:30 AM, arriving at Kamikochi around 7:05 AM. The weather was great, beautiful, and impressive. Initially, the weather forecast predicted rain because it had been raining the days before, so I was prepared for that. However, on the actual day, it didn't rain, the sky was clear, and the sun was shining. It was really beautiful. Around 10:00 AM, it started to get crowded. An important note is that you have to take your trash with you as it's hard to find a place to dispose of it, and there is a 100 yen fee to use the restroom.

Kamikochi is a popular tourist destination in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. The only way to get there is by bus because cars are not allowed to drive there. However, there are many buses available. The view is also very beautiful. Anyone who goes there will not be disappointed. The food is delicious and there are many souvenirs. No matter where you take a picture, it will be beautiful. (If you don't want to see many people, I recommend going in the morning because around 11 am, there will be a lot of people.) We stepped into Kamikochi, known as the Japanese Alps, and stood in this quiet valley looking at the distant mountains, which seemed to be covered with golden glory under the sunlight. The water of the gurgling Azusa River is crystal clear, and the green leaves on both sides of the river are dancing gently in the wind, as if to welcome our visit. Walking through Taisho Pond, the water surface is like a mirror, reflecting the magnificent figure of Mount Kithotaka. We stopped and felt the tranquility here, far away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, as if time had stood still here. As we continue walking along the wooden path, we hear the sound of the breeze blowing through the forest tops. Occasionally, a few birds happily shuttle through the forest, as if whispering the story of this world. As the sun gradually rises, we arrive at Mingshen Pond, which is said to be the residence of the mountain god. Standing by the pool, you can feel the mystery and majesty of nature, and your inner worries gradually dissipate, as if you are one with this piece of nature. Every scenery here is like a painting. It doesn't need too much modification. Its original beauty alone is enough to move people. The journey to Kamikochi is not only a feast of scenery, but also a cleansing of the soul. There are several ways to get there. You can take the Willer night bus from Tokyo or Nagano directly to Kamikochi. Alternatively, you can stay in Takayama and take the Nohi bus to Hirayu no Onsen, then transfer to another bus heading to Kamikochi. If you take the Nohi bus, it will stop at several locations before reaching the final stop, which is the visitor center, allowing you to take short walks and capture photos along the way. Kamikochi is especially beautiful in late October, so be sure to check the forecast to visit during the peak Koyo (autumn foliage) season. If time allows, I'd love to stay overnight to fully soak in the atmosphere.

I recently had the most amazing experience exploring Kamikochi, and I thought I'd share my journey with you all. I started my adventure at Taisho Pond Station, where the serene Taisho Pond itself greeted me with its mirror-like surface reflecting the majestic Hotaka Mountain Range. The early morning mist added a magical touch to the scenery, making it a photographer's paradise. From Taisho Pond Station, I embarked on a picturesque walk towards Kappa Bridge. The trail was well-marked and surrounded by lush greenery, with the sound of the Azusa River accompanying me throughout the hike. The air was crisp and refreshing, and the occasional sighting of wildlife like Japanese macaques and mountain birds added to the charm of the journey. As I approached Kappa Bridge, I was greeted by breathtaking views of the Azusa River flowing beneath the iconic wooden bridge, framed by towering peaks and dense forests. It was a perfect spot to pause, take in the natural beauty, and snap some photos to capture the essence of Kamikochi. For those planning a trip to Kamikochi, starting from Taisho Pond Station and walking to Kappa Bridge is a must-do. The approximately 3-kilometer hike (about 1.8 miles) is relatively easy and suitable for all fitness levels, offering numerous opportunities to connect with nature and immerse oneself in the tranquility of the Japanese Alps. It's unclear when they will reopen, but it's expected to be unlikely this week. It's recommended to check the Kamikochi official website before going. Introduction: Kamikochi is located in the Japanese Alps and is a very famous hiking sanctuary. It's a summer resort with an average temperature of 20 degrees in July, open only from mid-April to mid-November. 🚉Transportation: ① Matsumoto Station (8:02, Platform 7) — Shinshimashima Station (Kamikochi Line) 30min ② Shinshimashima Station (8:32) — Taisho Pond Station (9:36) Hiking Route: Starting from 'Taisho Pond': Taisho Pond - Tashiro Pond - Boundary Monument - Kappa Bridge (right turn) - Myojin Pond - across Myojin Bridge - Kappa Bridge (left turn) - Kamikochi Bus Terminal for return. Kamikochi is located in the upper reaches of the Azusa River in the western part of Nagano Prefecture. It is surrounded by the Hotaka Mountain Range, Mount Yake, and the Jonen Mountain Range. It is a small basin at an altitude of about 1500 meters and belongs to the Chubu Sangaku National Park. It became known to many mountaineering enthusiasts around the world through the introduction of the 19th-century British missionary and mountaineer Walter Weston.

🌿❄️ For those who are visiting Toyama and Matsumoto, I recommend going for a romantic hiking trail in Kamikochi. We went on April 17, which was the first day of the year ☺️with temperatures of 0-2 degrees Celsius and light snow falling, it was so awesome! ☃️ The word beautiful is used a lot here. There are the beautiful forests🌳, the snow that remains on the pine leaves🌿, the snowflakes that fall all along the way❄️, the streams along the paths and the ponds that are viewpoints. Kamikochi is a beautiful valley located halfway between Matsumoto and Takayama, so you can visit both cities as a day trip. This place has a policy of prohibiting private cars from entering the park in order to reduce pollution, preserve the environment and organize traffic. Therefore, those who travel by rented car must park their cars outside the park and take a bus to get in. We took the train and then the bus. 🚌 How to get there - We started our journey from Matsumoto Station, took the Alpico Kotsu Line, platform 7, and got off at Shin-shimashima Station, which took ~30 minutes. - When you arrive at Shin-shimashima Station, buy a bus ticket at the front of the station to go to Kamikochi (it will be a one-way ticket, and you can buy it at the bus station in Kamikochi for the return trip). - Take the bus from Shin-shimashima Station to Kamikochi, which takes about an hour. I recommend getting off at the Taisho Pond stop (K-29 Taisho Pond), which is the first stop in Kamikochi. Round trip Kamikochi fare 5,420 yen / person = 1,400 baht / person ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hiking route: 🌿We walked from Taisho Pond > Tashiro Pond > Hotaka/Tashiro Bridge > until we reached Kappa Bridge, a distance of 3.2 km. This route is a riverside walk with mostly snowy mountains. There are many beautiful ponds to stop and see. When we reached Kappa Bridge, we stopped for lunch and took some photos. There are restaurants, hotels, and a bus station there. 🌿After lunch, we continued on the trail to Myojin Pond, which is a full distance of 3.3 km. This route is different from the first one. Kamikochi is one of the most talked-about destinations in Japan in recent years. Why do people go there? Where is it located? Let's take a look at this review. Kamikochi is located in the Nagano National Park, part of the Northern Japan Alps. It is naturally beautiful in every season. Last year, I went during the autumn foliage season, so this year I decided to go during the spring instead. The park is open from April 17 to November 15 every year (it is closed during winter when there are no vehicles running, and you have to walk in by yourself). The highlights include Taisho Pond and Kappa Bridge, both about 4 km in distance, walking along the Azusa River. On the other side is Myojin Pond, also 4 km away. If you plan to go for a walk, you should allow enough time and prepare appropriate clothing.

📍Kamikochi (上高地) Kamikochi in Nagano Prefecture is one of the most beautiful mountainous places in Japan. This bridge is the "city center" of peaceful and tranquilat Kamikochi. 5mins walk from the bus terminal, several hotels along with restaurants, shops and snack counters are located at each side of the bridge. Further down (same side of the bus terminal) you can find free public toilet if you dont feel like donating 100yen to use the toilet at the bus terminal. Another 5 mins further is the nice konashidaira campsite. Great place with a nice view! We really had a nice time, even though we walked many km. I will totally come again in the future, if i have the chance.

Kappabashi is the center of Kamikochi, and around the Kappabashi bridge you can find amenities like a visitors center, small restaurants and hotels, and some shops. This hike covers mostly flat terrain and requires little to no hiking experience. If you want to do hike you can go to the Myojin Pond and back to Kappabashi via a different trail. This will take an additional 3.5 hours, and it is very much worth the trek. Myojin Pond is another famous highlight in Kamikochi with a tranquil atmosphere, a small shrine, and pretty foliage in autumn.

Kamikochi is surprisingly accessible and relatively “low effort” for a tourist to enjoy the full majesty of nature. Taking the Alpico bus from Matsumoto Station to Taisho Pond takes about 1.5hr and you can start the leisurely trek upwards, or simply continue riding the bus all the way to Kamikochi bus terminal where it is bustling with food shop and the amazing view from the Kappa Bridge. The natural history of Kamikochi is one of great elemental upheavals occurring over many thousands of years, though some of these were also quite recent. The mountains and valleys were shaped in part by glacial activity, evidence of which can still be seen in some of the most prominent peaks. Another major player in the formation of the area was Mt. Yakedake, whose eruption over 14,000 years ago changed the course of the Azusa River, causing it to run through the basin in which present day Kamikochi and Matsumoto are located. Mt. I finally reached the top of Qiangyue Mountain, my trip was a complete success [DAY3] Gundake hut - Gundake summit - Gundake hut - Tenguhara divergence - Gunzawa exit - Yokoo Sanso - Tokusawa - Myojinkan. On the third day, we hiked a total of 18 kilometers, descended 1,500 meters, and took 8 hours. If you stay in Datongpu, you have to accept being woken up early. Of course, breakfast starts at 6 o'clock, so you won't have breakfast if you wake up late. I rented a helmet and climbed to the summit with light equipment. Pulling on the chain and shaking the rope all the way, I finally climbed to the top of the mountain. It was a sunny day and I finally fulfilled my wish of not climbing to the top 5 years ago. It was very windy at the top of the mountain, so we stopped for a while to take photos and then descended. Today’s mission is also to descend the whole way, all the way to the bottom of the valley. From Gundake Hut to Gunzekou, it is almost all a rocky slope. The first half of the slope is quite steep, so be sure to tighten your hiking shoes and be careful not to sprain your feet. Although this year's maple leaf season has come late, the top section is still very beautiful. Looking back at Gundake, the sharpness soaring into the sky cannot be understood by looking at photos on the Internet. There is a reason why this mountain is so loved by the Japanese. The road gradually becomes smoother after Gunizawaguchi and enters the forest. After Yokoo Villa, all the way to Kamikochi, there are 10 kilometers of flat road. In addition to exercising your patience, the only thing left is to exercise your feet. I chose to stay at Myojinkan that day, which is still 3 kilometers away from Kamikochi. I avoided the high housing prices in Kamikochi and had a good sleep. I could also watch Myojin Pond the next morning and then walk to Kamikochi at leisure. The happiest thing is that today I can finally take a shower and take a bath!
