A kampong is a traditional Malay water village, where many homes are built on poles over rivers and waterways. #celebratewithtrip A must visit when in Brunei. The world's biggest water village, and has been here since the 11th century. One of the highlights of Brunei Opposite promenade allows a very scenic view of Kg Ayer and also a motivating jogging route. It is really interesting to see an entire village (really many) all built on the water. It is a very different way of life, just across from modern Bandar main area. You can do a boat tour, but can also take a boat across for about $1 and then walk through the houses. Exciting experience of sight-hunting for the Probosis Monkeys, crocodiles and other wild mangroved animals We saw some Kimodo dragons in trees, a fire station and some schools.

Great for a quick visit to an unusual way of living. This large village on the water is a testament to the imagination and perseverance of humanity. Very photogenic. It wasn't just a tourist attraction, but it was actually a huge water community where tens of thousands of people live, so it was really impressive. 🛥 | Getting on a water boat When we arrived at the river, there were small boats lined up, and the drivers waved us over. After haggling over the price for a few minutes, we got on a small water boat. The motorized boat cut through the water faster than expected and entered the village, and the wind brushed my face, giving me a sense of speed. At first, the feeling of running on water was unfamiliar, but it soon turned into excitement. I couldn't believe that the houses were floating on the water, and as I passed through them, I felt like I was in a scene from a movie. 🏡 | Village scenery on the water As I got closer on the boat, I saw that each floating house had its own unique personality. Some houses had traditional Malay-style roofs, while others had colorfully painted walls, making the entire village feel like a painting. There was a school, a mosque, and a fire station built on the water... I couldn't imagine the scenery, and the people living in it were impressive. The boat driver also explained the village from time to time. He pointed with his hand, saying, "This is the village hall, and that is the school." In some places, children were playing on the wooden bridge, and in some houses, the elderly were cleaning boats or cleaning fish. At first, I thought it would be just a tourist attraction with a few traditional floating houses, but when I actually went there, it was a much wider and more unique village than I had imagined!!🏘 I took a water taxi on the river to go to the village, and the wind on the small boat moving quickly was really cool and refreshing. The floating houses on both sides were built on wooden pillars, and the way they swayed slightly in the waves was very impressive. It felt like a small city floating on water.🛥 I couldn't hide my surprise as soon as I arrived at the village. There were many more houses than I thought, and it was a ‘real village’ with a school, hospital, shops, and even a mosque. People were born here, lived here, and educated their children here, just like in a normal city. I walked around the village on a narrow wooden bridge and looked around. Children were playing and running on the bridge, and the elderly were leisurely drinking tea on the shaded veranda. It was really nice to be able to experience the life of this village for a moment from the perspective of a local, not a tourist. 👏 What was particularly impressive was that this traditional lifestyle is still well maintained in modern society. The Brunei government has also established infrastructure to protect and support this village. It has electricity, water, and even internet, so I was able to see the coexistence of tradition and modernity. As I walked in the quiet and peaceful atmosphere, I felt like time was passing slowly. It is a traditional village built and inhabited since days of yore and synonymous with the Bruneian Sultanate history.More than 30,000 people inhabit Kampong Ayer, the largest water settlement in Southeast Asia, and travel about by boat or the extensive network of wooden walkways, footbridges, and boardwalks. Kampong Ayer’s 4,200 structures include homes, mosques, restaurants, shops, schools, and even a hospital. We walked over the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha bridge and visited the water village. You can find boatmen plying the river at the waterfront across the street from the Yayasan building. Prices are generally along this line, with locals paying 50-75% of quoted - $1 to cross the brunei river to the water village - $10 to roam the water village and with a view of Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha bridge by boat - $20 to do the same as $10, plus ply upstream and see nurul iman palace, royal tomb, mangroves, and proboscis monkeys. This trip needs at least an hour of your time.
