Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of History is located near Bashamichi Station on the Minatomirai Line. As you can tell from the outside, the building has a long history. The base is the neo-baroque part that was built as a bank building in 1904. The tasteful and beautifully arranged exterior adds color to the atmospheric Bashamichi. Unfortunately, it was already closed on the day I visited, but it was still satisfying just to look outside. Looks Like Europe? It’s Actually Yokohama! I originally planned just a one‑day trip to Yokohama, but after exploring, I realized it deserves more time. The city has evolved so much—it genuinely feels like a slice of Europe thanks to its historic architecture and wide, tree‑lined streets. Starting from Chinatown, I wandered toward the historic port area and came across stunning buildings such as: The Yokohama Specie Bank, built in 1904 in a neo‑Baroque style now the Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Cultural History. The remarkable Port Opening Memorial Hall (“Jack Tower”), a 1917 brick-and-granite structure with a 36‑m clock tower. Nearby, the Former Kawasaki Bank (today the Sompo Japan Nipponkoa building) in German Renaissance style, with its large dome and mirrored glass addition blending old and new . Wandering further into Yamate, I passed elegant residences like the Ehrismann Residence, a 1920s Swiss merchant’s home with a soft green facade. Drinking coffee at a local cafe, I noticed the pace here is more relaxed than in bustling Tokyo while still being a modern, highly livable city consistently rated among the world’s top urban areas. Places like Minato Mirai 21 add a modern skyline backdrop, with Landmark Tower, Queens Square, and the Cosmo Clock Ferris wheel making for an impressive contrast. Why stay longer: There’s a lot to see beyond just Chinatown—heritage buildings, quiet parks, waterfront views, and relaxed cafes. I wished I had more than a single day, and now I know I’ll spend at least two next time, soaking in both the historic charm and modern convenience of this unique city.

Located just a 1-minute walk from Bashamichi Station, the Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of History is housed in a historic building that was originally used as the Yokohama Specie Bank headquarters. This architectural gem has stood for over 120 years. The museum features exhibits that allow visitors to learn about the history of Kanagawa Prefecture. However, it is currently closed for renovations and will remain so until September 2026. While you cannot enter the building, its striking presence makes it worth a visit. It exhibits a wide range of materials, from archaeology to ethnography, focusing on the history of Yokohama and Kanagawa from the end of the Edo period to modern times. You will be overwhelmed by the beauty of the exterior, and inside the museum you can enjoy a time travel from the Edo period to the Meiji period. ▶Access: 10 minutes' walk from JR Kannai Station / 5 minutes' walk from Nihon-Odori Station ▶Tips: It's worth visiting the building / The permanent exhibition is recommended for those who like to take their time!

#ancienttownvibes Better than I expected. Staff were really friendly although because I can speak Japanese I’m not sure if they could speak English. The exhibit rooms and the exhibits themselves are excellent if somewhat low-lit. There are also explanations in English in many places. Definitely worth a trip there if you are in the vicinity and have time.This is a nice museum with lots of interesting historical and cultural displays that spans from the paleolithic period to post war Japan. It was amazing to see how early on humans began to build tools and pottery. Even more interesting was to see how far back the roots of some current day Japanese culture originated from. The only reason a five star is not given is because the museum is not laid out in chronological order. Displays jump between time periods and the layout is such that there are small rooms that can easily be missed because they are off to the side or at the end of a corridor. Regardless, it is a fascinating museum with lots of interesting cultural displays and is well worth a visit.
