Kandawgyi Lake is a nice place to go in Yangon. The boardwalks are long and wide, and there are several good spots for a picnic. It's a beautiful lake with a more than 6000 m long wooden bridge, constructed around it. The park on the northern side allows for some great pagoda views. There are many things to do around the lake area, including a plant nursery area, going for a walk around the lake, trying the food at one of the many restaurants around the lake. Note: Take an umbrella with you if the weather is hot - that's also what the locals do to protect themselves from getting too much sun. No fee needed. #mytravelhacks #myanmar #kandawgyi

Not far from Shwedagon Pagoda, just cross the road and walk a little bit and you will reach Kandawgyi Lake, which is a lake in the center of Yangon. There is a teak bridge along the lake. In the evening, the weather is nice and many people come to walk and take pictures. In the past, there was a hotel by the lake. It was a wooden house with many floors and a balcony with a lake view. It was called Kandawgyi Palace Hotel, but it was burned down several years ago. It was such a pity. On the other side of the wooden bridge, you can see a swan boat in the distance. That is the famous Karawek Restaurant of Yangon. I did not eat at this restaurant. But when I came back to Merchant Street, I saw a bakery and beverage shop and went to look. The upper floor is a restaurant. There are also Thai menus. We ordered one or two dishes each. The food was delicious and the price was not expensive. This restaurant is called FUDO Bakery Ygn Shop 6.

#favouriteitinerary Kandawgyi is a popular park in Myanmar with all sorts of attractions. Kandawgyi itself is the name of the lake that the whole park surrounds. Undoubtedly, this is where you’ll find people of all ages and classes of Myanmar ~ There are people doing morning walks, filming tiktok videos, etc. You can easily get there by ride hailing (taxi fees in Yangon average around ~$4), the only public transport Yangon has is their bus and it might be too difficult for tourists. There are several entrances so do your research before visiting to be dropped off at the most suitable location ~ There’s also this Karaweik castle that’s the most popular part of Kandawgyi which I’ll post about soon ~ It’s a must visit in Yangon. P.S. The photo of the food is at Min Lan (a popular rakhine food restaurant). They have a great selection of seafood too. This is one of the best places to dine while overlooking the lake at night.

Kandawgyi Lake means ‘the great royal lake’ in Burmese language. The first and foremost thing tourists can notice about the lake is its beauty. From the lake viewpoint, tourists can easily spot Shwedagon Pagoda from afar with no obstacles. The light from Shwedagon Pagoda reflects upon the lake’s surface, thus changing the colour of the lake. At dawn, the lake wears a silver-colour surface, and gold surface during the sunset. Combining with Shwedagon Pagoda, the view is truly magnificient. Around the lake are the wooden platforms where people can walk, run, exercise upon. These platforms also serve as the recreation spots. Jogging on the platforms feels extremely comfortable, surrounded by the lake and green lush flora. Another spotlight of Kandawgyi Lake is the Karaweik Hall, located to the eastern part of the lake. Karaweik Hall, or Karaweik Palace, serves as the build-up for the beauty of Kandawgyi Lake. The building follows the ancient Burmese royal barge’s style with two golden birds as the base. On top of that is the Pyatthat-style, muiti-tiered building with ornate roof. The backside’s design forms the bird’s tails, with the decorations on top reflect Nat spirit.
