A Perfect Weekend Itinerary in Katong
Katong is one of my favorite places in Singapore for a weekend food adventure, blending heritage flavors with a relaxing seaside atmosphere. Here’s how I would spend a perfect day in the area:
### Late Lunch at Katong Wei Mei Chicken Rice (Katong Shopping Centre)
A true hidden gem, this spot is known for serving one of the best chicken rice in Singapore. We ordered the mixed platter of roasted and poached chicken, both incredibly tender and flavorful. The fragrant rice was perfectly cooked, and what makes this meal stand out is the addition of fresh achar and a rich, umami-packed pork ribs soup that comes with it.
### Banana Pie from Dona Manis Cake Shop
Nestled in the basement of the same mall, Dona Manis Cake Shop is a well-loved spot for traditional pastries. Their signature banana pie is a must-try—flaky, buttery crust filled with caramelized bananas and a hint of coconut, creating the perfect balance of sweetness and texture.
### Chinese-Style Shaved Ice at Within the Walls Dessert Bar
A short bus ride took us to Within the Walls Dessert Bar, a HK-style retro cozy café specializing in delicate, Chinese-style shaved ice desserts. We tried the strawberry shaved ice topped with chocolate ice cream, a refreshing and indulgent treat that was both fruity and creamy in every bite.
### Stroll Along East Coast Park
As the afternoon melted into evening, we took a leisurely walk at East Coast Park. The gentle sea breeze, golden sand, and panoramic sunset views made for a peaceful and relaxing experience. Whether watching cyclists whiz by, listening to the waves, or simply soaking in the tranquil atmosphere, it was the perfect way to unwind.
### Dinner at Bedok 85 Market
A short bus ride later, we arrived at Bedok 85 Market, a hawker haven famous for its comforting and flavorful dishes. We enjoyed:
- Xing Ji Rou Cuo Mian (minced meat noodles), served in a light yet flavorful broth with tender minced pork.
- Ngoh hiang and hei biar, a crispy platter of five-spice meat rolls, fried prawn crackers, and assorted fritters.
- Charcoal-grilled satay and smoky, succulent BBQ chicken wings, the ultimate supper combination.
### Ending the Night on a Satisfying Note
After a day filled with great food and scenic views, we headed home, fully satisfied and already looking forward to doing it all over again. Katong never disappoints when it comes to good eats and a relaxing weekend escape.
