Kumamoto's Must-Try Michelin-Recommended Cuisine
When it comes to must-try dishes in Kumamoto, Katsuretsutei's Tonkatsu (fried pork cutlet) is undoubtedly a top choice. Made from Kagoshima's premium Rokuhaku Kurobuta pork, the quality is guaranteed with Michelin's endorsement.
Katsuretsutei has three branches in Kumamoto, and we chose the AMU PLAZA branch conveniently located downstairs from our hotel. Arriving at 5 PM, we waited for the dinner service to start and were able to secure seats without queuing, being among the first to enter.
The restaurant's ambiance is cozy and elegant, featuring wooden decor and a spacious seating arrangement that ensures comfort. Ordering is straightforward, with each table equipped with a tablet for placing orders. The menu is clear and illustrated with pictures. After ordering, the staff provides a grinding bowl for sesame seeds, which can be added freely and mixed with tonkatsu sauce.
The Rokuhaku Kurobuta pork is carefully raised, resulting in a crispy exterior and tender, juicy meat with a rich flavor. The pork cutlet is thick yet soft and elastic, easy to chew, and bursting with juices without any greasy aftertaste—truly delightful.
Besides tonkatsu, Katsuretsutei's fried shrimp is also highly popular. Each shrimp is large and plump, coated in a thin, crispy batter, with fresh and springy shrimp meat. Highly recommended for everyone to try.
The set meal is generously portioned, including appetizers, pickles, rice, miso soup, and shredded cabbage, all of which can be refilled for free.
If you're visiting Kumamoto, this historic restaurant is a must-visit. Katsuretsutei not only boasts Michelin recommendations but has also won numerous culinary awards, ranking among Japan's top 100 tonkatsu restaurants.
