Historic buildings
Kita-in is located in Kosenba Town, Kawagoe. It was built in 830 and is the regional main temple of the Tendai School of Buddhism. From the 16th to the 17th century, Kita-in was represented by Tenkai Monk (Master of Kindness), who had an extraordinary personality and was an important advisor to the three chief generals of the Tokugawa shogunate: Tokugawa Ieyasu, Hidetada and Iemitsu. It is said that Monk Tianhai is 108 years old. In 1638, Kita-in was destroyed by fire, so Tokugawa Iemitsu ordered the temple to be rebuilt, and some buildings were donated from Edo Castle. Including a room that is said to be the birthplace of Iamitsu, which can still be visited today. The Toshogu Shrine, which is within the confines of a spacious temple, is a place where rituals are held during the re-burial of Tokugawa Ieyasu. The Five Hundred Arhats of Kita-in are one of the three largest in Japan, and there are actually 538 stone statues here, each with its own facial expression. It is also a pleasure to take a closer look at all the statues.
