Lovely quiet place and we were welcome by the hot and warm sunny sun and people there. Never thought such a small place can be filled with many interesting history and touching stories. Love the vibes there and we visited many war memorial and zone spots. But after actually going there, you can truly feel the leisure and relaxation that this island brings to you. Basically, four people can rent a house, but there was no other group when we checked in, so two people could enjoy the comfort of renting a house. In the middle is the social hall, where there are many picture books to read. The atrium is small and cute. Listening to the rain on rainy nights and the chirping of insects on starry nights are the reasons why I like this place very much. The room is spacious, with a bed on one side and a desk on the other. There are also many picture books. The bathroom is a modern-style separate bathroom, which is very clean and comfortable. For those who like tranquility, I highly recommend staying in the trail settlement for a few nights. After your visit, consider sitting down at the small tea corner within the hall. While zongzi isn’t served here, you can order a cup of local sorghum red tea paired with Kinmen specialty snacks—taro strips, tribute candy, or replicas of soldiers' favorite peanut cookies. As sunlight streams through the windows and 1950s military songs play softly in the background, time seems to rewind, prompting reflection on how those young soldiers and female attendants, who often found Dragon Boat Festival particularly lonely, sought solace in this tea house. Kinmen is the farthest island from mainland Taiwan. In Korean, it is also commonly called “Kinmen Island”. I went to Kinmen using Kaohsiung Airport (domestic flight), and I used Uni Air, a domestic flight in Taiwan. What was a little strange was that it was not a jet-engine aircraft, but a propeller-driven aircraft. Propeller-driven aircraft were a little strange, but a little scary. It takes less than an hour to take off from Kaohsiung Airport to Kinmen Airport. Kinmen is only about 2km away from China, so in the past, there were big and small frictions due to its geographical location. Even now, traces of that time remain, and there are air-raid shelters, large loudspeakers, and traces of shelling that are no longer in use. Kinmen is famous for its sorghum liquor and kitchen knives made from shell casings. When visiting Kinmen, it is convenient to rent a car or scooter and travel. We took the ferry from Xiamen to spend a few days in the Kinmen Islands, and were not too sure what to expect! But we were pleasantly surprised with the variety of things to do, especially because we didn’t hire a car or a bike! We initially stayed in Jincheng, and then spent a night in Jinning, and some time in Qionglin. Arriving in Jincheng was like stepping back in time, with so many tiny establishments and an intriguing aura. There were some delicious food options though, from incredible beef noodles 🍜, to Minnan style Shaobings 🫓, and wonderful redbean taro soups 🫘 and surprisingly a great coffee shop! There is a long coastal walk along the beach - and if you time it well, you can reach the island of Jiangongyu at low tide! In Jinning and Quonglin, we stayed in a beautifully renovated minsu, and wandered around the remains of the ancient villages. We saw hardly anybody else, and there were plenty of places to take photos! Staying in a minsu is an absolute must for a relaxing weekend trip on Kinmen. The ferry from Xiamen was super easy; we just turned up at Wutong Ferry Terminal and bought a ticket about 45 mins before. It’s Kinmen again, how can we fly to Matsu?

The bow of Tong'an Ferry is located in a corner of Jincheng. For many Kinmen people, it is a suitable place for outing, overlooking, or quietly watching the sunset sink into the sea. When the weather is clear, the tall buildings in Xiamen in the distance seem to be looming only separated by a layer of mist, making them visible at a glance and as if they are within reach. However, behind this peaceful scenery, there is a sad history that few people know about. During the Japanese occupation, at the end of World War II, the Japanese army forcibly recruited more than 500 horsemen from Kinmen. These people were forced to serve in the war and left their homes. The wives and mothers of the snail horsemen are waiting here, staring at the distant sea line day and night, looking forward to their husbands' safe return. However, most of the waiting was endless silence and melancholy. Over time, this place became known as "Wangfu Cliff". Today, Wangfu Cliff stands quietly, and those distant sorrows have gradually been forgotten. When I walked along the ferry bow and saw the "Monument to the Martyrdom of Kinmen Horsemen Forced by Japan", I felt an indescribable feeling in my heart. Out of curiosity, I looked up this history and learned about the story of this place. Looking at the scene full of tourists and laughter, I suddenly felt a sense of sadness in my heart - the stories of those people who waited unforgettable and never returned may be forgotten in the past of this land as time goes by. From Xiamen, its very convenient to get to kinmen, just 7km from gaoqi airport to wutong harbour to board a speedboat to kinmen, journey to the historic island is 30mins from wutong harbour, the island is worth visit as it is a place to remind us the importance of peace on earth, many attractice places on the island, can ride on an island taxi to tour around the places.
