[2025 Yusui Attraction] Travel Guide for Kirishima Open Air Museum (Updated Mar)

As I was taking a flight from Kagoshima airport, I made a point to visit the Kirishima Museum which is on route to my hotel. The artworks were not what I expected but definitely interesting to see. The entrance welcomes you with a large Yayoi Kusama flower in bright colors, and there is a second piece by her after entering the museum. The main museum building holds paintings of surprising subjects which change regularly. There are also many large size art works placed outdoor and you will need to follow the map to look for them - some were hidden in the wood and require a bit of effort to find. I don’t want to spoil the fun, but it is quite different from all the museums that I have visited. Once you have seen everything, you will understand why it is located there. It will all make sense! The museum is opened from 9-530pm, and entrance fee is only ¥320 for adults and 230/150 for high school and primary students. While there is a bus that goes to the museum , it is really easier if you have a car. The road is quite straightforward and the museum is easy to find. There is a cafe at the museum but it closes 30 minutes before actual museum closing. Yayoi Kusama's "Flowers of Shangri-La" is not to be missed, and the photos are superb. • Kirishima Hot Spring Village: How can you not soak in hot springs when you come to Kirishima! The hot spring water here is of excellent quality and rich in various minerals, which is beneficial to the body. You can choose to soak in the open-air bath while enjoying the surrounding green mountains and trees and enjoy a relaxing time. There are also family hot springs. For more than 100 RMB, you can enjoy natural hot springs, water baths, saunas, etc., which is very cost-effective. Food recommendations • Kurobuta no Kan: Kirishima’s famous black pork cuisine, a must-try! The pork chop is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, and the shabu-shabu is fresh and fragrant, which will satisfy the taste buds who love pork🐷 • Torigane: Roasted chicken and chicken sashimi are a must-try. It takes about 1 hour and 50 minutes from Tokyo Haneda Airport to Kagoshima Airport; it takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes from Osaka Itami Airport✈️ • Internal transportation: There are few buses in Kirishima City, and driving is the most convenient way🚗 If you choose public transportation, take the airport bus from the airport to Kokubu Station, change to JR to Kirishima Jingu JR Station, and then take a taxi to the hotel; you can also take the JR directly from Kagoshima Central to Kirishima Jingu JR Station, and then take a taxi. Notes • Public transportation in Japan is generally very punctual, so pay attention to the last bus time to avoid delays. • Follow local etiquette in the hot spring baths and wash your body before entering the hot spring pool🧼 • Most restaurants require you to take off your shoes to enter, so remember to understand and respect local customs in advance.
