One of the beautiful old towns in Montenegro. The well-preserved city wall is built on St. John's Hill, winding around the entire mountainside, and climbing to a high point, you can overlook the city of Kotor and the canyon, and the scenery is magnificent.

[Montenegro] Kotor
Kotor, a World Heritage Site in Montenegro
3.5 hours by bus from Dubrovnik 🚌
We arrived by ferry ⛴️
After a short walk from the port,
we arrived at the entrance to the walled city.
It's a very compact city, so you can easily get around in an hour, even if you stop by St. Tryphon Cathedral and St. Nicholas Church, or stroll through the alleys 🚶♀️
It seems that you can walk up the city walls, but we didn't have enough time to stay, so we gave up...
(The course seems to be on the right side of the 5th photo)

The atmosphere is unique and the old and narrow streets send you into a lovely and romantic story.
The imposing Kotor Bay is also an important and defining factor for the beauty of the city, which makes it more pleasant and unforgettable.
Every corner has it's own story and it is just impossible to turn off your camera.
The city must be also known for the big number of friendly cats.

Kotor, Montenegro, is an absolute gem! Nestled between towering mountains and the sparkling Adriatic Sea, this ancient city stole my heart during my summer vacation. 🏰🌊 The moment you step into Kotor's Old Town, you're transported back in time with its narrow cobblestone streets, medieval buildings, and charming squares. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the 3€ entrance fee to climb the city walls is totally worth it. The views from the top are breathtaking—you get a panoramic view of the entire bay and the red-roofed city below. ⛰️
After exploring the Old Town, I wandered through local shops, enjoyed a coffee in a quaint café, and visited the St. Tryphon Cathedral, one of Kotor's many historical treasures. The whole area is steeped in history and offers a great mix of cultural and natural beauty. Whether you're into history, photography, or just love exploring new places, Kotor has something for everyone. #trip #KotorMagic #MedievalCharm #Montenegro #OldTownWanderings #StunningViews

The ascent to the walls is a bit challenging but oh-so-rewarding. The stone-paved paths and centuries-old staircases lead you to heights that reveal Kotor's red-tiled roofs, the stunning bay, and the majestic mountains beyond. 🌄🏞️
Walking along the fortifications felt like stepping back in time. The well-preserved walls, watchtowers, and cannons tell tales of Kotor's strategic importance and rich maritime history. The cool sea breeze adds a refreshing touch to the journey. 🌬️⚓
Climbing up to the Castle of San Giovanni at the top is the ultimate triumph. The panoramic views from this vantage point are simply awe-inspiring. It's a photo enthusiast's paradise! 📷🏰
After conquering the walls, a visit to the Church of Our Lady of Health is a serene continuation. This quaint church, nestled on the descent, provides a peaceful retreat and offers its own historical charm. ⛪🍃
The nearby Gurdic Gate marks the entrance to the Old Town and serves as a gateway to explore the charming streets, squares, and hidden gems of Kotor. 🚶♂️🏰
For a post-wall treat, a visit to the Bastion terrace is a must. This cozy spot within the walls offers a chance to relax with a drink while enjoying the picturesque scenery. 🍹🌅

[Montenegro] Kotor Fortress: a spectacular spot in a port town reminiscent of Ghibli
Access: 20 minutes walk from Kotor bus terminal to the entrance.
Food & Restaurants: After entering, there are only a few simple drink shops at key locations.
Shopping: None.
The port city of Kotor is the most popular tourist destination in Montenegro, where half of the country is mountainous.
The beach and the churches in the compact old town are the highlights, but this fortress is a great spot to see the whole cityscape.
To reach the top of the fortress, you have to keep climbing steep stone steps, which is quite tough. I do weight training on a daily basis, but it took me just over 30 minutes!
Hydration and protection from the sun are essential. The stairs are narrow, so when passing each other on the way up and down, you may have to walk on uneven cobblestones instead of the stairs, so non-slip shoes are a must.
When you reach the top, you can see a nostalgic view that is just like a Ghibli movie. The terracotta-roofed houses crowded together in the triangular area and the port with ships passing by against the backdrop of the black mountains are definitely worth the entrance fee and the energy you'll have to spend. Be sure to check it out when you visit Kotor.
