🌧️ Moody Skies Over Kubota Castle Ruins – A Quiet Slice of History
We visited Kubota Castle Ruins on a rainy, overcast day—which gave the entire site a somewhat somber and moody atmosphere. While it would’ve been great to explore under blue skies, the snow-dusted scenery still managed to lend a certain charm to the experience.
Having visited several castles across Japan, we found Kubota Castle to be modest in comparison. It’s relatively small, and the restored structure only has a few levels open to the public. That said, we enjoyed climbing to the top, where the observation area offered a lovely bird’s-eye view of Akita and its surroundings.
The castle grounds were peaceful—perhaps too peaceful, as we were the only visitors during our time there. It was nice to enjoy the quiet, but it also highlighted how subdued the attraction felt, especially in the gloomy weather.
Parking was available but required a bit of a walk to get to the castle entrance.
In all, Kubota Castle Ruins may not be the most spectacular castle visit in Japan, but if you’re already in Akita, it’s worth a stop for the views and a glimpse into the local history.

[Akita] Akita: A city where passion resides amidst tranquility
#Spring0yenTrip
When I went to Akita, I first stopped by the Neburi Nagashi Museum. There was a row of large Kanto poles from the Kanto Festival on display, and I was amazed at their weight and size. It was also fun to actually hold a Kanto pole in the experience corner. The power and skill of Akita's festivals was well conveyed through the exhibits. After that, I had Kiritanpo nabe at a local restaurant, and it was amazing, with a strong dashi stock and the flavor of Hinai Jidori chicken. Akita was a place where the depth of tradition and flavor really stayed in my mind.

Exploring Kubota Castle's Yagura: The Beauty of Akita's History and Architecture
In Akita City, Akita Prefecture, Japan, I visited the Yagura of Kubota Castle, a place brimming with historical and architectural beauty. I took sixteen photos to document this inspiring visit.
The Yagura of Kubota Castle, located within Senshu Park, is the only remaining structure of the castle. Originally a defensive feature of the fortress, it now serves as an important venue to showcase the history and culture of Akita. As I entered the Yagura, I was immediately captivated by its rustic architectural style and well-preserved structure.
Inside the Yagura, there are several exhibitions that display the history of Kubota Castle, the culture of the Akita domain, and the architectural techniques of the castle. The exhibitions include ancient artifacts, historical documents, and exquisite models, which provided me with a deeper understanding of the castle's history. Particularly, the delicate crafts and samurai armor on display revealed the craftsmanship and lifestyle of the time.
From the top of the Yagura, one can overlook the entire Senshu Park and the beautiful scenery of Akita City. The view from here is expansive, highlighting the importance of the castle's defensive features. At the same time, the surrounding natural landscape complements the ancient architecture, creating a picturesque scene.
During the visit, I also learned about the restoration history of the Yagura. The structure was damaged during World War II but was carefully repaired in subsequent restoration efforts, preserving its original appearance and historical value. These restoration works demonstrate the importance and protection of historical heritage.
My exploration of the Yagura at Kubota Castle allowed me to appreciate the magnificent architectural landscape and to understand the rich history and culture of the area. I will forever cherish these wonderful memories and look forward to returning here in the future to explore more history and beauty.
