Kumamon Overload in Kumamoto: Souvenirs, Soft Serve & Smiles
We visited Kumamon Village during our time in Kumamoto and it was such a cute and cheerful stop, especially for fans of Kumamon. It’s located on the second floor of the Sakura-machi Kumamoto shopping complex, right next to the bus terminal and tourist information center, so it was really easy to find.
The space isn’t very big, but it’s packed with Kumamon-themed fun. As soon as we walked in, we were surrounded by shelves of plush toys, snacks, keychains, stationery, and all sorts of adorable souvenirs. Prices were a little on the higher side, but that’s to be expected for official character goods. They even had a ranking chart for the most popular items, which helped us decide what to bring home. We ended up buying more than we planned!
There’s a small café corner where you can grab Kumamon-shaped soft-serve ice cream and other themed treats. We didn’t try everything, but the soft serve was fun to look at and surprisingly tasty too.
We had hoped to catch the live Kumamon performance, but unfortunately the timing didn’t work out and we missed it. It’s something we’d definitely try to catch next time—I’ve heard the shows are really entertaining and even non-Japanese speakers enjoy them.
Overall, it was a fun and lighthearted stop. We probably spent about 30 to 45 minutes browsing, shopping, and enjoying the atmosphere. If you’re in Kumamoto and like cute character goods (or have kids with you), it’s definitely worth a visit—even if just for the photos and snacks.
