I've dreamed of walking the Kumano Kodo, a World Heritage Site, since I was a student, and finally got to go after I became a working adult 😌 Since I was visiting the Kumano Kodo, I borrowed a Heian period costume and walked around, and it was better than I expected. Light and quick check-in itinerary: Starting from your arrival at JR Kii-Katsuura Station, take a bus to the final stop - Nachi Mountain, check in at the waterfall, climb up the mountain, visit the Grand Shrine, and then walk from the bus terminal to another direction's parking lot (there are signs on site) to connect a short section of the Kumano Kodo, hike down the mountain, experience the pilgrimage route, and in about 1 hour you will reach Daimon-ban, continue walking forward and you will find a bus stop, then take a bus back to JR Kii-Katsuura. You can stay overnight or wait for a bus to your next destination, the whole journey takes about 4 hours. If you are staying overnight in the surrounding cities and do not want to change hotels, you can start your journey from JR Kii-Katsuura Station. If you plan to stay overnight in Kii-Katsuura, it is recommended to stay at the Urashima Hotel, where from the rooftop outdoor area of the mountain pavilion of the hotel, you can even gaze at the Nachi Falls (the last picture), and with a good camera, you can capture it, then plan to visit the eastern side of the town's sea ⛩️ - Benten Island (located at 2 o'clock direction from the map's JR Kii-Katsuura Station) and that's pretty much it~ All the eateries are around the JR station.

I had planned the Kumano Kodo trip for a long time, but the weather was so bad on the day. It hadn't rained when I climbed up Daimonzaka, but it started to rain heavily less than half an hour into the climb. The road condition was bad, and I was afraid of slipping, so I had to wait for the next bus to the waterfall at the bus stop. Then I had to climb the long stairs in front of Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine, and the rain never stopped. I was really tired and embarrassed. Although the weather was very bad, the scenery in the mountains and forests was still memorable. The stone steps before going down the mountain from Nachi Taisha Shrine were really impressive. As expected, I lost my balance and fell down once or twice, and my pants were wet. But next time I will still be fully prepared to go again.

Take bus No. 31 from Kii-Katsuura Station and get off at Daimon-zaka for about 25 minutes. There is a tourist center at Daimon-zaka where you can pick up a map. Beginner hikers should take a hiking bamboo from the hiking bamboo rack near the tourist area. This bamboo is very useful. Remember to return it to the hiking rack near the bus stop on the way back. If you start the Taiye Historic Trail from Damenzaka, you will find that the trail is shaded by large trees and has large stone steps. It is very labor-saving and safe to walk along it while holding a bamboo pole.
