Located in the hinterland of Xishan National Scenic Area, Longmen Grottoes is a cliff stone carving art Attraction that integrates natural wonders and cultural relics. Unlike the grandeur of the northern grottoes, this place is known for its steep terrain and exquisite carvings - hundreds of stone steps are carved along the cliff, winding to the viewing platform at an altitude of more than 2,000 meters. Every step along the way can overlook the waves of Dianchi Lake and the city walls of Kunming. The excavation of the grottoes began in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Craftsmen used chisels to carve three groups of Taoist statues, Kuixing, Wenchang and Guansheng, on the red rock walls of the Danxia landform. Kuixing, with fluttering clothes, stepped on a giant turtle with one foot, and the tip of his pen pointed directly at Dianchi Lake; the pattern of the jade scepter held by Emperor Wenchang is still clearly visible. Visitors can take a closer look at the Qing Dynasty inscriptions preserved on the rock walls, and feel the hardships of the ancients' construction of "red rain flying on a path, and green shades scattered in thousands of forests" from the "Poems Complimentary to Taoist Wu". After reaching the top, pass through the "Dragon Gate" stone archway that can only accommodate one person sideways, and touch the carp stone sculptures that have been covered with slurry for years, which in the hearts of local people means a wish for the student movement. The Attraction has specially designed two tour routes: the cultural route focuses on the grotto statues and cliff inscriptions, while the natural route connects the karst landform trail from Lingxiao Pavilion to Xiaoshilin. In March, when the camellias are everywhere, old men often write poems about Dianchi Lake on the stone slabs of the viewing platform with fountain pens; in the rainy season, the clouds and mists over the grottoes add a bit of etherealness to the Taoist fairyland. If you meet porters on the way down the mountain, you might as well listen to their stories about their fathers "drilling in the air" to dig tunnels. There is no grand narrative here, only deep and shallow chisel marks on the cliffs, witnessing the centuries-old dialogue between people and cliffs. .
