Kawagoe Ichiban Street was very prosperous in the Edo period, and it is called "Little Edo". Because it was not damaged by the war, many quaint old buildings and streets were left. Today, less than an hour's drive from the international metropolis of Tokyo, you can "travel" back to the Edo period 400 years ago and experience the dreamy feeling of stepping back in time. The building complex of "Zangzao" is on both sides of the main street of Kawagoe, and the buildings called "Zangzao" are row upon row. These ancient houses are built with wood and 30 cm thick stucco. Fire protection has allowed these buildings to survive to this day.

The street of old houses built by Kawagoe Ichibanya has been developed since the Edo period. What is rare is that this old street seems to have stopped time in the Edo period, and still retains many ancient buildings and traditional culture of the Edo period in Japan 😍 There are shops on both sides of Ichiban Old Street, very few ancient houses, but the Tibetan buildings are still well preserved, the construction style is very characteristic, some of which are more designated as intangible cultural property 😗 We arrived at 5pm, most of the shops have been closed, but the streets are quieter, more feel the tranquility of Koedo 🥰

Exploring Kawagoe: A Perfect Day Trip Through Edo-Style Streets and Historic Landmarks
If you're looking for a charming day trip from Tokyo, Kawagoe is a hidden gem that blends old-world charm with vibrant culture. Located just a short train ride from the city, it's a perfect destination for history buffs and those who love a leisurely stroll through traditional streets.
Ichibangai Street
Your adventure starts at Ichibangai, a lively street that feels like a step back in time. Lined with Edo-period buildings, this street is a great place to soak up the historic atmosphere while enjoying modern shops and cafes. The iconic warehouse-style buildings, with their distinctive black brick exteriors, are a testament to Kawagoe's nickname, "Little Edo." You’ll find everything from traditional snacks like sweet potato treats to charming souvenirs. The street can get busy, but it’s worth the buzz as the architecture and vibrant street life make it feel alive with history.
Kawagoe Castle
To round off the day, head to the Kawagoe Castle grounds. Though the main keep was lost to fire, the remaining structures, including the Honmaru Goten (the castle's inner palace), give you an insight into what life in a samurai stronghold must have been like. The castle's bell tower, often referred to as the "Tenshukaku" tower, stands tall as a symbol of the city’s feudal past. The surrounding gardens are peaceful and offer a quiet respite from the more bustling areas of the town.
Kawagoe offers the perfect blend of history, culture, and modern-day charm. Whether you’re wandering through Ichibangai’s lively market atmosphere, admiring the well-preserved Kurazukuri architecture, or soaking up the historic feel at Kawagoe Castle, there’s something for everyone. It’s a city that invites you to slow down and enjoy the beauty of the past while still embracing the present. If you’re in Tokyo and want a taste of traditional Japan, Kawagoe is an excellent, easy-to-reach escape.

[Kawagoe Day Trip] Coffee and tea shops you'll want to visit in Kawagoe
A must-see for coffee and tea lovers! We will introduce you to some stylish coffee and tea specialty shops that you should definitely visit when you go to Kawagoe!
[1. Kawagoe Tea House Coeur a Coeur]
A popular tea specialty shop in Kawagoe. They carry a wide range of teas and have unique menu items such as tea floats and shakes. The shop had a tasteful atmosphere and was full of people.
I ordered royal milk tea and scones. I was grateful that the royal milk tea was not sweet. It was a masterpiece with a rich taste and the aroma of tea.
The scones were fluffy and different from what I expected, but the taste itself was delicious. It was also served with clotted cream, which was great to eat with plenty of it!
[2. Toshino Coffee]
A coffee shop that is perfect to stop by while walking around Kawagoe! The friendly staff were kind and helpful, and they were happy to give me advice when I bought coffee. In addition to buying beans, you can also purchase drip bags, making it a perfect shop for those looking for souvenirs. They also sell take-out drinks, so please stop by!
Both are wonderful places, so please come and visit them! #DomesticTravelDiary

Ding Dong Ding Dong time for a TRIP with trip
I booked with trip for a airtix from Singapore to Japan then Korea back to Singapore. First the heavy snow at Korea delayed the flight by 6 hours. Then just the night before we were going to Seoul, martial law was announced. Some train trip were affected and my return trip train from Busan to Seoul was cancelled. luckily I booked through Trip and there was a chat function which helps a lot when you are a foreign country and not knowing their luggage. The picture above is in Japan also known as a little Edo.
