Historic buildings
The old Asakura family residence, located in Shibuya District, Tokyo, is a representative relic of modern traditional Japanese architecture. This residence, built during the Taisho period, combines the styles of Shoin-zukuri and Sukiya-zukuri. The main building is constructed of cypress wood, and the sloping roof and deep eaves design show the spatial rhythm of Japanese architecture. The layout of the courtyard follows the borrowed scenery technique, with the dry landscape and pond landscape complementing each other, and stone lanterns and maple trees dotted in between, forming a distinct viewing level for the four seasons. The interior retains tatami rooms, grille sliding doors and niche decorations, and some areas display traditional tea ceremony utensils and lacquerware crafts. As the most complete samurai residence in Tokyo, its building complex fully presents the living space form of the modern upper class and is now designated as an important national cultural property. Through regular openings and cultural activities, the residence has become an urban cultural landscape that allows people to experience the traditional Japanese residential aesthetics.
