Lamayuru Monastery

The Lamayuru Monastery, also known as Yuru Gonpa, is one of the oldest and largest monasteries in Ladakh, India. Situated in the Leh district of the Indian union territory of Ladakh, Lamayuru Monastery is perched atop a hill overlooking the barren landscape of the region.
Founded in the 10th century, the monastery belongs to the Drikung Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. It is believed to have been originally built by the Indian scholar Naropa, who meditated in the caves surrounding the monastery. Legend has it that the site was once a lake, which miraculously disappeared, leaving space for the monastery.
Lamayuru Monastery is renowned for its stunning architecture, whitewashed walls, and intricate murals adorning the interiors of its prayer halls and chapels. The monastery also houses a rich collection of thangkas (Tibetan Buddhist paintings), scriptures, and ancient artifacts.
One of the highlights of Lamayuru Monastery is the annual masked dance festival, known as the Yuru Kabgyat, which takes place during the 2nd and 3rd days of the 5th lunar month of the Tibetan calendar. The festival attracts pilgrims and tourists from around the world who come to witness the colorful masked dances, religious rituals, and cultural performances.
Apart from its religious and cultural significance, Lamayuru Monastery offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, rugged terrain, and the moon-like landscape of the Lamayuru Valley. It remains a spiritual and cultural center for Buddhists in Ladakh and a must-visit destination for travelers exploring the region's rich heritage and natural beauty.
