Eat in Tsim Sha Tsui | Yamamotoya | A century-old restaurant from Nagoya, Japan
#Wofu和虾子饼 I got to know "Yamamotoya" because of the long queue at the Tai Wai branch, and when I saw that there was no queue at the Harbour City branch in Tsim Sha Tsui, I tried it.
"Yamamotoya" is from Nagoya, Japan. It was founded in 1925 and has a history of nearly a hundred years.
Walking into the restaurant is like walking into a Japanese garden.
A must-try for first-timers is the hand-cut #udon, which has three soup bases to choose from.
Waffles ordered one of the chef's recommendations, Shrimp Tempura Udon ($108). The soup base was the traditional miso from the old shop. The soup base was not as "heavy" as expected. It turned out that the restaurant deliberately reduced the concentration of miso by 20% to retain the traditional flavor while catering to the tastes of Hong Kong people. The hand-cut udon reminded me of the waffles I had in Japan, with a heavier flour texture.
The shrimp tempura had a lot of room for improvement.
For the shrimp cake, I ordered the Oyako Udon, which was also recommended by the chef. "Oyako" means chicken, which is much more delicious than shrimp tempura. The golden bonito clear soup tastes good, and those who are afraid that the miso taste is too strong can choose this soup base.
We also ordered the miso oden ($50), where we could savor the flavor of the red miso which we rarely get to eat.
