From Dim Sum to Street Art: A Day in George Town Where Tradition Meets Trend

George Town isn’t just a place — it’s a feeling. A walkable city where heritage and hip blend effortlessly, where the scent of local food dances through the air, and every street has a story to tell.
7:30 AM – Dim Sum at Lebuh Kimberley
The day kicked off with breakfast at Lebuh Kimberley, where locals queue for old-school dim sum. Siew mai, har gao, and fluffy char siew bao arrived steaming hot — washed down with strong local kopi. The lively atmosphere was the perfect introduction to the morning buzz of George Town.
9:00 AM – Morning Stroll Around Komtar & Local Market Vibes
The old heart of George Town’s modern development. Just nearby, I stumbled into a traditional morning market, where aunties bargained for fresh vegetables, hawkers shouted out breakfast specials, and the scent of fried noodles filled the air. The scene was lively and authentic — a beautiful snapshot of everyday Penang life.
10:30 AM – Mural Hunt in Armenian Street
Next, I took a short walk toward Armenian Street to dive into the city’s famous street art. The highlight was definitely the “Children on a Bicycle” mural.
12:00 PM – Lunch & Cake at China House
I stopped for lunch at the ever-iconic China House, known for its heritage layout and long list of decadent cakes. After a light meal, I treated myself to a slice of their famous tiramisu — easily one of the best I’ve had.
2:00 PM – Seaside Views at the Esplanade
With a full stomach, I headed to the Esplanade (Padang Kota Lama) for a breezy stroll by the sea. Colonial buildings like City Hall and the Clock Tower made a stunning backdrop, while the sea breeze offered a refreshing break from the midday sun.
3:30 PM – Coffee & Calm at Norm Micro Roastery
When the heat picked up, I ducked into Norm Micro Roastery — an aesthetic café hidden behind a minimalist entrance. With its high ceilings, soft lighting, and indoor greenery, it felt like a retreat from the city. I ordered a hand-brewed coffee and sat back for a well-earned break.
4:30 PM – Wandering Around Beach Street
After coffee, I explored Beach Street, lined with grand colonial buildings, restored shophouses, and cool boutiques. The late afternoon light lit up the architecture beautifully.
5:30 PM – Sunset Stop at Chew Jetty (姓周桥)
I ended my route here where time slows down on wooden boardwalks above the sea. Locals relaxed outside their homes, cats stretched in the fading sun, and the horizon glowed with that unmistakable Penang sunset.
George Town, even in just a day, leaves an impression that lingers. Whether it’s the clatter of a dim sum tray, the brushstrokes of a mural, or the stillness of a seaside jetty — it all stays with you. I came for the food and history, but I left with much more.

The Maker Cafe: A Hidden Gem

Address:
243, Beach St, Georgetown, 10300 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia.
While everyone is flocking to well-known and overhyped cafes in Georgetown, we found ourselves a little hidden gem called The Maker Cafe.
Tucked along Beach Street, this cafe is perfect if you want a hideout from the heat of Penang and it's quiet too - good for your gathering with friends and loved ones too.
What we loved the most was the Canele, perfectly crispy on the outside, and chewy and buttery on the inside. Delicious, we'll definitely have another go at it!

Reggae Cafe, Penang ✨
#wheretogo
Walking along the streets if Penang, we stumbled upon this cafe. Unassuming from the exterior, you will be impressed by its interior. Tastefully decorated, well air-conditioned, plenty of seats and have really chill vibes.
Menu was rather extensive, they serve mains such as pizza, pasta, poultry, desserts and beverages. We tried out a pasta dish — Tomyam Seafood Pasta but it was just okay. Dessert was good and the serving was generous.
What I really liked about the cafe was how spacious it was. There were three seating areas and can accommodate many! Give it a try when you are in town!
