Porto celebrates Sâo Joâo for a week every year, but especially on the evening of the 23rd which is absolutely amazing. There were concerts and people dancing everywhere, everyone had plastic hammers and were hitting strangers passing by, it was a party everywhere! One of the most anticipated moments of the day was undoubtedly at midnight, after everyone had tried to walk across the bridge (roads were all closed), we were lucky enough to get the best view of the fireworks over the Douro River. The bridge was the focal point of the Sâo Joâo firework celebrations, which was the highlight of our trip. The lower level is for cars ( under restoration), and Porto's Metro Line D on its upper level, pedestrians can walk along the bridge at both levels. Take metro line D to Jardim do Morro station, then stroll along the upper deck of the bridge and you will rewarded with spectacular views of edifices built into the hillside cliffs that line the river. Proceed to the lower level, either by cable car ( pay money ) or walk, the lower level currently under restoration, so nothing much to see. Porto is known for having quite a few bridges, the Dom Luis I Bridge is especially renowned because it was designed by the students of Gustave Eiffel, the mastermind behind the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Porto has surely gained a lot of attention over the last few years, and for good reasons: it’s vibrant, colorful, easy, not expensive at all and you can get everywhere on foot! As soon as I stepped out of the São Bento station right before sunset I was invested by the energy of this city and started exploring every part of it, starting from the Dom Luis I bridge over the Douro river, which is definitely the first stop I suggest to have a fantastic view of Porto and its prominent Ribeira district. What I loved the most was wandering through its steep, colorful alleys that are still incredibly authentic and mostly untouched. Put in some good, comfortable shoes then get lost in this part of the city. At the top of the city there are some incredible churches, like Igreja do Carmo and Capela das almas: these two have some amazing facades entirely covered by tens of thousands of blue tiles called “azulejos”. You can see these azulejos across the city in other spots too, including the station as mentioned earlier of São Bento. A 15-minute bus or train ride will get you to the beach to breath in some air from the Atlantic Ocean. You can either go to the lighthouse at Foz do Douro or head over to Senhor da Pedra’s beach, notable for its small church on the rocks! A visit to Porto (and Portugal in general) is not complete without eating a lot of pasteis de nata as well. A stroll along Avenida Vimara Peres is a delightful experience, full of vibrant sights and a rich sense of the city's energy. I also passed by the Escadaria da Tv. de Cândido dos Reis several times. This charming stairway, located in Vila Nova de Gaia, is a hidden gem that winds through a narrow, picturesque street.
