Hiking Up Lycabettus Hill: A Must-Do in Athens! 🇬🇷
#europetrip
If you're looking for the best panoramic view of Athens, hiking up Lycabettus Hill is an unforgettable experience! Standing at 277 meters, it's the highest point in the city and offers breathtaking views of iconic landmarks like the Acropolis, the Aegean Sea, and even the distant mountains.
The Hike 🥾
The trail starts from Kolonaki, winding through lush greenery and charming pathways. It takes about 30–40 minutes to reach the top, depending on your pace. While the incline can be steep at times, it's manageable for most fitness levels. If you're not up for a hike, there's also a funicular railway that can take you to the summit!
The Reward 🌅
Reaching the peak, you'll be greeted by the picturesque Chapel of St. George, a small whitewashed church that adds to the charm of the hill. The real highlight, though, is the 360-degree panoramic view—especially magical at sunset when the city is bathed in golden hues.
Tips for Your Visit
✔️ Wear comfortable shoes—some paths can be rocky.
✔️ Bring water, especially in summer, as it gets hot.
✔️ Go just before sunset for the best views and fewer crowds.
✔️ Grab a drink at Orizontes, a restaurant at the top with an amazing view.
Lycabettus Hill is a must-visit for anyone exploring Athens—whether you're a nature lover, a photography enthusiast, or just want to take in the beauty of the city from above. Have you hiked up Lycabettus? Share your experience in the comments! 🏔️✨ #Athens #LycabettusHill #GreeceTravel

A hike up Mount Lycabettus
Athens has a number of hills and mountains to hike up for great views of the entire city - our favourite was Lycabettus Hill.
The trail is short but steep, so it's a bit of a workout, but there are several paths to choose from, allowing flexibility in how you approach the climb. The view from the top is absolutely breathtaking—you get a panoramic look at the Acropolis and the entire city of Athens, which makes the effort completely worth it.
In November, it’s refreshingly quiet, with few people around, adding to the peaceful experience. Near the summit, there are restaurants where you can sit back, relax, and even use the facilities—super convenient after the hike up. At the top, there's a charming little church, and if you go on a Sunday morning, you might catch a glimpse of the local churchgoers. Overall, Lycabettus Hill offers a perfect mix of exercise, views, and cultural charm.
This was a perfect way to end our trip in Athens, leading us back into the Plaka neighbourhood for some last minute souvenir shopping.

Sunset at highest point of Athens 🌄
#voyagevibes
Standing 277 meters above sea level, Lycabettus Hill is the highest point of Athens. It is best enjoyed at sunset whilst waiting for the lights of the Acropolis, Temple of Olympian Zeus, Panathenaic Stadium and Ancient Agora to come on. You will also be reminded that Athens is surrounded by sea with spectacular views across the Aegean.
At the top of the hill you will find the Greek whitewashed church of Agios Georgios (St. George) and all are welcome to enter. The viewing platform in front of the church provides sprawling views of Athens, stretching out to the city’s coastline.
Getting there🚟: beautiful walk up via a circular path or funicular railway.
