Stepping onto the island, we were instantly struck by its quiet, almost ethereal charm. In stark contrast to the dense urban sprawl of Hong Kong, Ma Wan felt like a world away—untouched by the frenzy of modern life. We strolled along Main Street, soaking in the unhurried atmosphere before wandering deeper into the village. As we explored further, we encountered clusters of abandoned buildings, their timeworn facades standing as silent testaments to the island’s past. There was an undeniable allure in their faded walls and forgotten windows, an eerie yet fascinating glimpse into a bygone era. Continuing our journey, we followed the coastline where fishermen’s boats bobbed lazily in the water, a scene reminiscent of a simpler time. Eventually, we arrived at Ma Wan Tung Wan Beach, a tranquil stretch of sand with an unrivaled view of the majestic Tsing Ma Bridge. By day, the bridge towered over the water in all its engineering brilliance, seamlessly connecting Tsing Yi and Ma Wan. But as the sun dipped below the horizon, it transformed into a luminous spectacle—bathed in a dazzling purple glow, its lights shimmering against the inky waters like something out of a dream. Ma Wan is a great place that is not far from the city but still offers a sense of escape from the hustle and bustle. Especially for people like us from Tsuen Wan, you can get there in just ten minutes by catching a ferry from Tsuen Wan West Pier at the right time. If you want to avoid the crowds and spend a quiet Valentine's Day with your partner, Ma Wan is also a good choice. The two of you can stroll around quietly, enjoy the views of Tsing Ma Bridge and Ting Kau Bridge, and have a cup of rare Turkish coffee at the Hot Sand Coffee in the village houses while playing with the cats, which is warm and cozy. Afterwards, you can take a walk on the beach. The beach here is great because it is not crowded. At dusk, the two of you can watch the beautiful sunset, and the bridges light up with twinkling lights, creating a romantic and enchanting atmosphere. Of course, you can also enjoy a meal at the restaurant by the beach, and Cafe Roma is my top choice.
