Matera is honestly one of the most magical places I’ve ever visited. Matera is located in the Basilicata region of southern Italy but it’s fairly easy to reach by train from Bari. You need to take two trains, but it seems like it’s a guaranteed connection between both services. Visiting Matera can easily be done as a day trip from Bari, but I would also recommend staying overnight if possible. I really wish that I had been able to do that. It’s a beautiful town just to wander around all the beautiful streets and see all the beautiful architecture. There are cave dwellings that can be visited also. I would highly recommend the Museo Laboratorio della Civilta Contadina, aside form Matera itself it was my favourite place that I visited. I was in Bari and then i took the bus to Matera. It took a little more than one hour to get there. The city of Matera is in the Basilicata region. It was a new experience for me to travel here. Something about it looks and feels different too from the regular italy I had been experiencing. It feels somewhat empty and remote but at the same time there is plenty of greenery. World Cultural Heritage: The Fairy Tale Town of Trulli Mushroom Houses in Italy Alberobello is a small town in the province of Bari in the Puglia region of Italy, located on two small hills that are not very high, known as 'Heaven Town' and 'Mushroom Town'. It is famous for its Trulli architecture: white lime walls and grey stone blocks make up the conical roofs of the round dome stone houses, which are unique to the local residential buildings. One interesting theory about Trulli architecture is that in the 17th century, residents fought against the authorities to 'save on taxes'. As soon as a house was completed, property tax had to be paid, but the structure of the round dome stone houses allowed residents to easily dismantle a part when officials came to inspect, indicating that the house was not yet finished, thus 'saving on taxes'. As a typical representative of prehistoric architectural technology without mortar, in 1996, the round dome stone houses of Alberobello were listed as a World Cultural Heritage site by UNESCO 🚗 About Transportation Since it is a self-driving loop, we drove from Amalfi at about 8 am and arrived in Alberobello after more than 4 hours. You can also take a train or bus from nearby to Alberobello train station, and it's less than a ten-minute walk to the center of Mushroom House Town. 🏨 About Accommodation Actually, I was a bit hesitant before playing, but after playing, I found that it was a very wise choice not to arrange to stay here. Our itinerary was Amalfi-Alberobello-Matera. So we didn't stay in Mushroom Town that day. 🅿️ About Parking There are many parking lots around, with different charges. We found one that charges per time, 5 euros/time, with spacious locations. First, we went to the church and the sovereign stone houses on the left side of the main street, then came down for lunch, and strolled through the mushroom house cluster on the right side. There are various shops. The white houses are particularly photogenic; actually, there are no special photo spots, it feels like the whole town is very picturesque wherever you shoot. The overall commercialization of the town is still a bit severe.

I came here with my friend, who told me that Matera was a city that was filmed in the famous car-racing movie. The landscape here really shocked me at the first glance. It’s a stone city with such a different view from other southern cities in Italy. But when I dived into visiting and wandering around it, I fell in love with its beauty. Polignano a Mare 🌊 This beach town is perfect to go for a swim! 3. Restaurant Grotta Palazzese 🍝 The location is incredibly beautiful but the reviews online are a nightmare (expensive and bad food quality) so better just swing by for a picture 📸 4. Cave of Poetry 🏖️ Unfortunately it‘s forbidden to swim there nowadays but it looks really nice! 5. & 6. Alberobello 🌸 Make sure to stay in a trulli house for the night and go for a walk early in the morning! Every corner looks so beautiful 😍 7. Torre de Sant Andrea 🏖️ Bring your bikini but be prepared for strong waves 🌊 8 .& 9. Monopoli 🌅 In our opinion this is the cutest place in Puglia. If you want to stay in one town during your trip, I would highly recommend this one. It‘s charming, has lots of restaurants and a beach 🏖️ 10. Matera 💃 Not a part of Puglia but very close by so it would be a shame to skip it! It‘s one of the oldest cities in the world Other places nearby: -Locorotondo -Ostruni 🏨 Where to stay We made a road trip coming from the Amafi Coast and stayed in a cave hotel in Matera, followed by a trulli house in Alberobello and a farm house near the Cave of Poetry. If you only want to stay at one place during your trip, I would choose Monopoli 🤗 🚗 How to get there You need a car to get to all of these places! There’s lots of parking though and roads are okay compared to other places in Italy 🙈 ⏰ Best time to visit We were there in July and it was definitely too hot! I would not do it again to be honest 😅 We only went out early in the morning and late in the evening and had to cool ourselves down all the time. Better go in Mai / June or September / October 🤗 🐶 Is Puglia dog friendly? YES!
