[2025 Kalambaka Attraction] Travel Guide for METEORA PARK (Updated Jun)

The Meteora is a rock formation in Central Grecce hosting one of the largest and most precipitously built complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries. Meteora is located near the town of Kalabaka, which is around 355 kilometers 5 hours away from Athens. Meteora is the largest archaeological site of Greece, it has been a UNESCO World Heiritage Site since 1989. A vast complex of giant rock pillars with monasteries made on the picks of the sandstone cliffs centuries ago creates a truly surreal landscape found nowhere else in the world. Today only six monasteries are active, during our tour, we visited 3 out of 6, that is Holy Monastery of St. Nicholas Anapafsas, Holy Monastery of St. Stephen ( the most easy access with a stone bridge ) and Holy Monastery of Holy Trinity. In order to visit all the six monasteries, you need to stay at least for 1 night, you also need to take note of their different opening hours. 3 euros need for the entrance fee to the monastery .

we drove up to the north of Athens about 400 km to see the incredible formation, the sharp edges of the mountains, and the monasteries located by the cliffs…simply breathtaking!!!

I visited Meteora after driving four hours one way after falling in love with a single Instagram video. It seems that many people visit from Athens as a day tour, but since the round-trip travel time is not short, I recommend staying for about one night. We checked in at our accommodation in Kalambaka around 4 PM and walked the hiking course from Kalambaka to St. Stephen's Monastery. It is not a long course, about 30 minutes one way, but it is still hiking. However, because it was late, we could not see the inside of the monastery and just looked at the view and came down. The next day, we drove to the most famous Valaam Monastery and Meteora Monastery. The monastery is larger in size, but I personally liked Valaam Monastery better. The monasteries in Meteora are closed on alternate days of the week, so please check the schedule. Also, women should wear long skirts or bring a scarf. Some monasteries lend scarves to wear around your waist like a skirt, but in the case of the Monastery, you had to buy one. I suggest ditching tour groups that drive up the monastery. Instead hike up!!!! The feeling is very satisfying and fullfilling. You can stay at the hotels at the base of the Meteora. Wake up early and slowly climb. If you want to catch the sunrise wake up earlier duhhhh. Anyway as you climb up the rocky pathway it kinda dawn on you how the priest and priestess and everyone at the monastery hike up and down everytime they need something from town. I love the Kalambaka area here. Everyone is so warm and friendly. Every morning everyone sending good vibes greeting each other "Kalimera" which is good morning. I will always Kalimera to you too lol. The hotel that I stayed in literally under the rocks...love the view...love how cooling it is....If you are a nature person, you can feel all the earthly energy giving you it's abundance....You will feel very recharged.
