#celebratewithtrip Miri Oil Well No. 1 - Grand Old Lady, is first oil well in Malaysia. Situated on top of Canada Hill, Well No.1, also known as the 'Old Lady' or 'Grand Old Lady'. It represents the petroleum history of Miri which is almost a century old and is one of the place of interest in Miri. It has been declared as protected historical site by the Sarawak Government. There is an observatory platform where visitors can have an excellent view of Miri City. Next to this oil well is Petroleum Science Museum. There is surrounding with historical signage for us to be more understanding how people extract crude oil in old day. Nowadays it is one of place to hang out with friends and family. The Grand Old Lady is not a literal old lady, is located on Canada Hill in Miri. It is Miri's first drilled oil well which took place in the year of 1910 by Shell Company. The Grand Old Lady is one of Miri's many main places of interest and also act as an important monument in the eyes of the local's and definitely, the world's. This famous landmark has a height of 30 meters and marked the beginning of modernization of Miri city as back in the years before the discovery of The Grand Old Lady, Miri is just an undeveloped fishing village. There is a museum named the Petroleum Museum situated just next to The Grand Old Lady. Recently they installed a new Hollywood style sign board next to the museum that can be seen directly from the city below. This board resembles the one that is in Hollywood.

The Grand Old Lady, site of Malaysia's first oil well Miri Number 1 is located on top of Canada Hill overlooking Miri town. Although of undoubted interest to those with a general interest to Sarawak's economic history this will hold a particular fascination with those who like me who were associated with Sarawak, and Malaysia's, Oil & Gas Exploration business. There is a replica rig on the actual original rig location, also many plaques detailing relevant information. The Oil Well was spudded in 1910 and only abandoned in 1972, total field production before depletion was 80 million barrels. Well worth a visit for both the views and the replica of the original Oil Well. There is also a restaurant next to the Oil Rig, only open for dinner but has wonderful sunset views of Miri town and the South China Sea. #tripblazers #awesomepic #oilwell
