Did you know that there is a church in Spain with distinct mosque features? During this trip to Europe, I visited many different churches. Although they were beautiful, most of them looked quite similar, which led to a bit of aesthetic fatigue 🫠. However, the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba (Catedral de Córdoba) in the Andalusia region of southern Spain is truly unique! It was a refreshing sight 🤍. This church was originally built as a mosque by Muslims in 785 AD and was later converted into a church in the 16th century after the Christian conquest. It combines Islamic and Christian architectural styles, especially its famous red and white arches and the magnificent Baroque-style altar. As soon as we walked in, we saw many red and white arches. Initially, I thought there were only a few, but it turns out the entire church is filled with arches. Under the sunlight, the colors of the arches become even more striking. It's perfect for photography 🤍. The church also houses many artworks and grand altars, making it well worth a visit! We visited twenty different churches, and we unanimously agreed that this is one of the must-visit churches! It retains the features of a mosque while incorporating Christian elements. You won't feel any sense of discord; it's truly magical! If you visit Spain, I highly recommend heading to the south to see this culturally blended church ⛪️🕌.

The one place that touched my soul during my 14day trip to Spain

#europetravel Cordoba, is the only place I have known so far, that blends a mosque and a cathedral together. Architecturally, it wasn’t as well known as Alhambra in Granada or Royal Alcazar in Seville, because it’s not solely coming from the root of Islam. But to me it is one of the most remarkable architectural achievements left behind by the medieval Islamic ruling. Because the place is too great and I’ve too many good photos to share, I’m gonna break it down into roughly two parts: the mosque, and the cathedral (check out my next post). Built during the Umayyad rule in Spain, it is a masterpiece of Islamic architecture that showcases a unique blend of artistic traditions from different regions, including Visigothic, Roman, and Byzantine influences. The most striking feature of the mosque is its hypostyle prayer hall, which consists of an extensive grid of columns and double-tiered arches. These horseshoe-shaped arches, supported by alternating red and white voussoirs, are a hallmark of Islamic architecture in Al-Andalus and were inspired by earlier Roman and Visigothic designs. Another defining feature of the mosque’s architecture is its mihrab, an elaborately decorated prayer niche that marks the direction of Mecca. The courtyard, or sahn, is another essential component of the mosque’s design, originally used for ablutions and communal gatherings. The interplay of light and shadow throughout the building, combined with the rhythmic repetition of arches, creates an almost hypnotic effect that enhances the spiritual experience of those within.

The Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba lies in the center of the old part of town, right along the river. Many of the cities in the south of Spain have a large Cathedral that was once a Mosque. It’s interesting to learn about the unique history of this part of the world! Pros: -The structure is huge. You can spend at least an hour touring the whole inside of the building. -Tours are provided in many languages. -Cost effective: It was 22 euros to prepay online -Open throughout the day Cons: -It was quite crowded. -Parking is a little bit far away Cordoba is a small city, but if you can fit it in to your trip to Spain, you can see this along with the Alcázar in one day easily. It's a place where you can spend an afternoon.

I really love the church. Every time I walk in this environment, I feel like I am absorbing energy. The church is very large.
