Marugame Castle, a National Important Cultural Property A three-story castle built in the city, with stone walls 60 meters high! It is built in four layers, forming a beautiful curve, and is called the "fan slope." As we got closer, the beauty of the stone walls stood out, and we were moved❤️ The castle tower was built in the 16th century, and is still standing as it was at the time⭐️ It is one of the 12 remaining wooden castle towers in Japan. A long-established specialty store for Kagawa's specialty "bone-in chicken"✨ [Hone-in Chicken Ikkaku Marugame Main Branch] The bone-in chicken is baked in a special pot and has a fragrant aroma. Although it is simply seasoned with salt, pepper, and garlic, it is spicy the moment you put it in your mouth❤️ The "Oyadori" (1,129 yen) is chewy, while the "Hinadori" (1,001 yen) is soft and juicy⭐️ They are surprisingly small, so you can eat one in one go😋 The Ikkaku way is to eat it by dipping cabbage or rice balls in the fat👍 They do not accept seat reservations, so when I went at 5pm when they start opening in the evening, there was a long line of about 30 people. Marugame Castle, with its 400-year history, is an iconic symbol of Marugame. It was built over five years by the samurai Ikoma Chikamasa and his son Ikoma Kazumasa. The stone walls, which rise from the moat to the keep, reach a height of 60 meters, the highest in Japan, and are known for their distinctive curves called 'fan slope.' Additionally, Marugame Castle's keep is one of the twelve remaining wooden keeps in Japan and has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The main store of Honetsukidori is also in Marugame, highly recommended to enjoy after touring the castle.

This was my second visit. This time I had Sanuki Mochi Pork Udon. The udon was chewy and delicious, and there were plenty of toppings to choose from. It gets quite crowded on weekends, but if you come early in the morning on a weekday or avoid peak times you can get a quick meal! This is a must-visit restaurant when you're touring the udon areas of Marugame.

Shikoku Aquarium is a next-generation aquarium located in an ocean view overlooking the Seto Inland Sea! ✨ This is a spot where you can encounter the rich water scenery unique to Shikoku☻ The aquariums are also carefully designed, and they look like paintings♡ They are perfect for taking photos! Marugame Station This JR Shikoku Yosan Line station is located in Shinmachi, Marugame City, Kagawa Prefecture, and has two platforms and two tracks. Marugame Park and Marugame Castle Ichiban-cho, Marugame City, Kagawa Prefecture. About 10 minutes walk from JR Marugame Station. One of Japan's 100 famous castles, it has the tallest stone wall in Japan. It is also known as Kameyama Castle and Horai Castle. The entire castle ruins are designated as a national historic site and are now Kameyama Park. The park is free, but the castle tower costs 200 yen for adults. Pair it with chicken broth rice, cabbage soaked in chicken oil, and take a bite of the juicy grilled chicken—it's pure satisfaction. This dish is highly recommended by Japanese locals, even more appealing than udon noodles. This time, I visited Marugame, the birthplace of this dish, and of course, I had to try the crispy grilled chicken. The restaurant thoughtfully provides scissors, but the authentic way to eat it is to grab the chicken leg and take a big bite, followed by a sip of alcohol for a carefree experience. The restaurant's tofu fried in chicken broth is so delicious that you'll want seconds. Pair it with a highball, and you'll leave feeling completely full. Why has 'Bone-in Bird' become popular in Marugame and throughout Kagawa? It actually has ties to the local economy. Kagawa has its own port, historically serving as a gateway for importing grains. Facing the Seto Inland Sea, Marugame Castle occupies a strategic location as the gateway to Shikoku. This strategic importance led to the construction of Japan's tallest stone walls, reaching a total height of 60 meters—equivalent to laying the foundation for a 20-story building before constructing the castle above. Climbing through the stone walls and forest to reach the top is exhausting, and the castle's design likely aimed to prevent easy enemy attacks. The origins of this castle date back to the Muromachi period when Nara Motoyasu received the land and built a branch castle in Naka District, marking the earliest form of Marugame Castle. During the Keicho era, Ikoma Chikamasa, who was granted control of Sanuki Province, used Osaka Castle and Azuchi Castle as models to construct Marugame Castle. However, in the Edo period, the Tokugawa shogunate implemented the "One Castle Per Province" policy, leading to the dismantling of Marugame Castle while leaving Takamatsu Castle intact. In 1645, under the approval of the shogunate, the then-lord Yamazaki Ieharu rebuilt Marugame Castle, preserving its gracefully curved stone walls and three-story keep to this day. This smallest keep in Japan is entirely wooden and features a blend of Karahafu and Chidorihafu architectural styles, making it small yet exquisite. Myōhō-ji Temple, with a history dating back 1,300 years, belongs to the Tendai sect. During the Sengoku period, it served as a place of prayer for the feudal lord's family and a spiritual sanctuary for the people of Marugame. The temple enshrines the secret Buddha statue of Dainichi Nyorai, a Daikokuten statue crafted by a Tendai sect master, and a statue of Genshin Daishi subduing demons. Genshin Daishi, also known as Ryōgen, Tsuno Daishi, Mame Daishi, or Jihye Daishi, was the 18th head of the Tendai sect and a key figure in the revival of Enryaku-ji Temple on Mount Hiei. He is said to have founded the warrior monks who influenced Japanese history. Legend has it that during the Eikan era, a plague broke out in Kyoto, and Genshin Daishi himself fell ill. Entering a meditative state, he transformed into a yaksha form to drive away evil spirits. Upon awakening, he instructed his disciples to draw the yaksha image and distribute it to the people, which helped quell the epidemic. Due to this yaksha form, he became known as "Tsuno Daishi." During the COVID-19 pandemic, many Japanese people placed Tsuno Daishi talismans in their homes for protection. Another type of talisman, the Mame Daishi talisman, is also popular. The word "mame" (豆) sounds similar to "mame" (魔滅), meaning "demon extermination," and is thus considered a charm for warding off evil. First, the rooms: After renovation, the space feels more open with a combined bar and sofa replacing the fridge cabinet and chairs. The room is equipped with an air purifier and a refreshing air freshener, unlike other branches that use alcohol-based substitutes. The large windows offer a view of Marugame Port. The public bath is separated for men and women, unlike other branches where usage alternates, often leaving men to wait until late at night to bathe. A delightful surprise here is the late-night udon noodle service, and for breakfast, you can choose curry udon noodles. The dining area is clean and bright, without staff rushing you to finish your meal. The bread selection is also impressive, with freshly baked bread continuously replenished, eliminating the need to reheat cold bread and causing long queues. Location-wise, it's very convenient, situated between Marugame Station and Marugame Castle. It's an ideal base for visiting Kotohira Shrine or the Iya Kazura Bridge.
