Best Things to DoNo.4 of Best Things to Do in Nagano Prefecture
Historic buildings
Naraijuku is a small post town on the Nakasendo Road in Japan. It stretches about 1 kilometer from north to south along the Nakasendo Road and retains a strong Japanese style. From the south along the highway, the area is divided into three districts: Kamimachi, Nakamachi and Shitamachi. In the past, the main store, small shops and wholesalers were all located in Nakamachi in the city center. In addition, within a range of about 200 meters from east to west, there are shrines at the north and south ends and in Nakamachi. Naraijuku has a very distinctive architectural style, especially its beam structure: the slightly protruding beams on the second floor, the entrance gate, the side door for daily entry and exit, the lattice door next to the entrance, the dark smoky gray lattice of the second floor handrail, the white plaster sets on both sides, and the exquisite carvings added everywhere are all examples of post station buildings left in Narai. The eaves are very long, supported by wooden beams called monkey heads, which contrast with the lattices and shutters, and have a deep charm that is not found elsewhere.
