[2025 Niah Attraction] Travel Guide for Niah National Park, Sarawak, Malaysia. (Updated Mar)

Start your adventure to Niah National Park with a pleasant 90-minute drive from Miri. The roads are good and signages are clear. Cross the river (look out for crocodiles!) by boat and take a walk in the great outdoors towards the cave entrance. It is mostly flat and really easy to walk. Interesting animals (mostly reptiles, snails and bugs) can be observed along the walk way and make for a good squeal or two! The chameleon in the photo above jumped on one of our kids! 🙈 The caves are magnificent! They are also dark! So flashlights are a must. Smell the guano and look out for bats and swiftlets too. If you are lucky, you might observe birds’ nest collectors making the arduous climb up the cave ceiling. Accommodation is available at the park. It’s clean, spacious, and comes with options for air-conditioning or just fan. It gets pretty cool at night. Hot water is a little iffy but it’s all part of the experience! Pack a simple picnic lunch on your journey and you can stop to eat it when you reach the cave entrance. For dinner, you can drive out to Niah town (about 10min away) and you’ll find some restaurants and stalls. Niah is a really wholesome activity for the whole family and children as young as 7 years will find it curious, exciting and most of all, the 8km walk is achievable! My 2023 travel wish is to visit New Zealand’s South Island to see the wildlife and beautiful scenery on hikes. I think that would be a family outing to remember too! #2023travelwish

#celebratewithtrip Must visit Niah Cave when you're in Miri. Niah Cave is alive with 40,000 years of unwritten history, because it was inhabited by humans at at least 40 millennia ago. The caves are the site of some of the oldest human remains discovered in Southeast Asia. The whole to and from trip from the jetty till the end of the Painted Cave could take up to 4 hours, so start your trip early in the morning. Trails could be slippery after the rain. On the island of Borneo, there is the most important natural attraction of Malaysia - the Niah National Park, famous for its unique caves. This area acquired the status of a national park in 1971. The basis of the park is made up of dipterocarp forests, limestone, peat bogs. Among the representatives of the local fauna are flying dragons, long-tailed macaques, hornbills and salangans. By the way, salangan nests are considered edible and they even make a special soup, which is an expensive delicacy here. The natural world of Niah Park is very rich. #gooutside A trip to Sarawak Borneo did not complete without a visit to one of the cave in this state. Niah cave is one of them. Located around 100km from Miri city centre, this Niah cave is indeed a place where people can experience a cave exploration on their own without having a guide. As it is part of Niah National Park, visitor will be required to pay the entrance fee for this visit. Facilities like chalet accomodation is provided for those looking a longer stay at this National Park. Basic facilities like toilet is available at the main office entrance. Upon entering the National park entrance, visitor need to cross the river by using the boat provided. Extra cautious need to be taken as the sign clearly mentioned " AWAS BUAYA" or translated to " BE CAREFULL OF CROCODILE" in english. So if you are planninf to swim to cross the river, the. you have to think twice!! Most of the walking path was properly build with wood planks, so visitors do not have to worry about the track path. Just follow the wooden planks, then you will directed towards the amazing view of Niah cave. Half way through, if you are lucky you will see some locals selling sourviniers, cold drinks and some snacks. It is a perfect stop before you continue your 3km journey to the mouth of niah cave. Allocate 3-4 hours for this cave exploration and head lamp or any torchlight is advisable as you will need them once you enter the dark area of the cave. Overall it was a great experience to be able to explore the Niah cave which is one of the main archieological site in south east asia. #niahcave #borneo

What would I be if I was born 40000 years ago. Would love to be a macho hero who provided for others or I would just be a nobody… Niah National Park is about one hour drive away from the nearest city.. Miri. It was one of the oldest civilisation of human. The park itself is accessible by a small boat crossing the river and a short hike to the museum and the wonderful cave itself. It was mesmerising to learn how our very early ancestor live their life. So basic and yet it was the beginning of evolution that led us to our modern age. Glorious is the world that I can think of. I wouldn’t want to live in that era. Haha, I still prefer to be able to fly to most parts of the world within 24 hours. After we spent half a day hiking the park and cave, we decided to spent the night near Tusan beach. We stayed at Tim Cottage. The resorts consisted of many chalets on the hillside facing the South China Sea. Each chalet painted in different colour. It was beautiful and very comfy. We took a swim in the rather rough sea that day and had a wonderful barbecue that night. Oh… What a wonderful world… I sang the song made famous by Louis Armstrong.

It has multiple caves with impressive and archeological sites. We had hikes about 6 hours to reach the Niah Cave. I literally love the natural surroundings, there is dense primary rain forest which is home to many species of plants and wildlife. If you are lucky enough, you can spot some wild animals such as Hornbill, Monkeys and various type of insects and snails. One of the reasons Niah became World Heritage Site is there are 7 types of burials at the Hell Trench where the Deep Skull was found. I'm truly enjoyed learning about the 40000 year old Deep Skull. Overall, it was really an appealing and challenging outdoor adventure! ⏩ Visitors must register first, admission ticket for Malaysian is RM10, also prepare RM2 for the boat ride before the hike. ⏩ Be noted to bring a torchlight, drink and good walking shoes, plus gloves to hold on to the railings as there is a lot of bat poop. 🕰️ Operating hours: Monday to Sunday including Public Holidays – 8.00am to 5.00pm. Easy 4 hours walk. Flat wooden bridge all the way to the cave. Plenty of stairs in the cave to facilitate your "climbing". Must bring a torch light along if you intend to go all the way in the cave. If you're interested in nature, I bet you're gonna love it. My family and I had a visit here in May 2024. I'm totally impressed. There is an entrance fee for Malaysian and Non-Malaysian. For me, It takes almost 3 hours return trip from the entrance to the cave itself. You will pass the trekking sites and some mini souvenir shops along your way to the cave. Inside the caves, you will find some of the oldest archeological sites and bird's nest high up on the cave walls with mystical sounds of bats and cool wind flow. #malaysiatrip The must visit place if you are at Bintulu or Miri (1.5hr from Bintulu). Entrance is RM10 for Malaysian. Parking available at entrance, after register, take a boat ride (RM1) to cross the river, will arrive at Musium first (free), then start walking along the pathway to the caves. It take 40 min to reach the first cave(trader cave), another 20 min to reach the second cave (Great Cave), from great cave another 1 hour to reach the Painted cave. Trader cave is the easiest, doesn't involved a lot of staircase, straight path, suitable for children and elderly, Great cave require hike up staircase and the most difficult and need light support if going up to Painted cave. Recommend to bring enough of water, change of clothes after exploration of the cave, good shoe as you will be walking around 10km (more than 10000 steps), toilet are available at the entrance and also inside. It takes about 4-5 hour to explore all the caves. Return boat to entrance is RM1 and the last boat leave at 4pm.
