The castle consists of two concentric rings (Kuruwa) of fortifications, the Ninomaru Palace, the ruins of the Honmaru Palace. It was built in 17th century and in use till 1939. Be prepared to spend a few hours if you want to have the full experience. It can be done within 1-2 hours but you definitely want to come back for more! Nijo Castle was built by order of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Edo Shogunate. In 1877, the 15th Shogun of the Edo Shogunate, Tokugawa Yoshinobu, returned power to Emperor Meiji at the Ninomaru Palace in Nijo Castle. Emperor Meiji promulgated the "Restoration of Imperial Rule" and abolished the shogunate. At this point, Japan entered the Meiji era, introduced Western learning, and rose rapidly.

The admission fee was 1300 yen, which was expensive. After passing the main hall decorated with gold and decorations, (no photography allowed inside) there was a wide, well-kept garden, and it was so nice to walk around. They even had an outdoor wedding. However, since we had babies, we took them with a stroller, but the floor was all stone, so the stroller couldn't go very far.
