[Shizuoka Prefecture] Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace, an industrial revolution heritage site that supported Japan's modernization
The Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace is a World Heritage site located in Izu Nagaoka, Shizuoka Prefecture, that proves the history of the Industrial Revolution. This site, registered as a World Heritage site as a component asset of the "Iron and Steel" sector of the Industrial Revolution Heritage Site, is one of two remaining reverberatory furnaces, along with the Hagi Reverberatory Furnace in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Egawa Hidetatsu, the governor of Nirayama, advocated the need for coastal defense after Perry's voyage to Japan, and under orders from the shogunate, he began work on the construction of an iron furnace that would enable the casting of cannons, and the Nirayama Reflection Road was completed. The cannon cast here is a Western-style cannon called an 18-pound cannon, and a replica is on display on the premises. 📸
At the museum nearby, the origins of the Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace and the casting method of the cannon are explained in an easy-to-understand theater screening. 🎥
*I felt the tireless efforts of the people at that time... 😳
In addition to the Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace, which led to the modernization of Japan, Nirayama is also associated with Minamoto no Yoritomo, who opened the era of the samurai government, and is a place where you can feel the history that transcends the boundaries of time. 😌
