[2025 Munich Attraction] Travel Guide for Nymphenburg Palace (Updated May)

#2024mapped Since Germans are rather known for their quality of being principled (which could mean rigid), before my departure I had imagined Munich architecture to be rather squared and buttoned up. But not at all. The city centre has vibrant colours and a lot of to my eyes kiddish design/decorations. And there were dozens of places to see just within 1km radius. So definitely a travel-friendly city I would say. Places that I enjoyed (or would suggest): 1) Marienplatz - New/old town halls and many churches are next to here and its neighbourhood 2) St Peter Church - the observatory provides one of the best high point to view the city landscape 3) Asamkirche - a small church tucked in the middle of a row of shops, but the baroque-styled interior is enough intricate to be mind-blowing 4) Munich Residenz 5) Odeonplatz 6) Viktualienmarkt 7) Deutches Museum 8) Nymphenburg Palace 9) Hofbrauhaus - a hundreds-year-old restaurant that has become a must-go for global travelers (in the city centre, free toilet is hard to find, but the toilet here can be an accessible option, coz it’s too busy for anyone to check)

This glorious Baroque and Rococo palace, the largest in Germany, grew in size and scope over more than 200 years. Begun in 1662 by the Italian architect Agostino Barelli, it was completed by his successor, Enrico Zuccalli. It represents a tremendous high point of Italian cultural influence, in what is undoubtedly Germany's most Italian city. Within the original building, now the central axis of the palace complex, is the magnificent Steinerner Saal (Great hall), extending over two floors and richly decorated with stucco and grandiose frescoes by masters such as François Cuvilliés the Elder and Johann Baptist Zimmermann. One of the surrounding royal chambers houses Ludwig I's famous Schönheitsgalerie (Gallery of Beauties), portraits of women who caught his roving eye. The palace park is laid out in formal French style, with low hedges and gravel walks extending into woodland. Travelled dates btw 8-16 July 2023. There are many old towns, ruined Castle, Palace and Car Museums to visit in Germany. Most interesting places for me are: Heidelberg, Baden Baden and Munich. There is a Must visit palace in Munich not to miss, Schloss Nymphenburg Palace. The palace is huge and would need at least a day to take a slow relaxing walk to enjoy the entire place. Took a hop-on-off city tour bus which had brought us there within 20-30 mins.

You have to go early to visit this huge palace to avoid the crowds. It is about a good 10 min walk from the nearest train station. While walking towards the palace, you will come across a huge lake with lots of swans and ducks. The palace is huge and you may spent a good 2 hours touring the whole place. The enormous garden surrounding the Palace, which spreads over 200 hectares (490 acres), has been laid out in different design according to fashions over the years. A visit to this castle must include the magnificent "Great Hall" redesigned in the Rococo style. Today another of the main attractions is the "Gallery of Beauties", with its portraits painted from 1827 to 1850 for King Ludwig I by Joseph Stieler. The tour of Nymphenburg Palace also includes the bedroom where King Ludwig II of Bavaria was born on 25 August 1845.

This is Nymphenburg Palace in Munich! A beautiful palace with beautiful ceiling paintings and every single pillar is a great palace... Just seeing this place was so movingㅠ I came out around sunset and walked around the lake and park in front of the palace and the swans playing were really pretty! If you go to Munich, I recommend you visit this place and tour the wide parkㅎㅎ I went a little late so it was cold and hard to stay for longㅜㅜ The park is really wide so you need to prepare yourself mentally to walk around!! One of my first stops was Marienplatz, where I watched the famous Glockenspiel chime from the New Town Hall—such a cool experience! One of the best location to spend a day in Munchen

If you visit Munich, you should take half a day to explore Nymphenburg Palace. It's easily accessible from the city center by public transport like trams, taking about 20 to 30 minutes. Nymphenburg Palace was built by the Bavarian Wittelsbach family starting in 1664. Before entering the palace, you'll walk along a tree-lined path with a large pond in the center, where swans and ducks swim freely. As you proceed, you'll reach the main hall where you can buy tickets and beautiful souvenirs. I really liked their souvenir designs and bought some for friends. You can also browse around. In Nymphenburg Palace, I visited the following places: - The main hall of the palace, which features a grand hall adorned in white and gold. Although it can't compare to other grand palaces, the colorful wall paintings make it feel very stylish and timeless. Additionally, there's a Gallery of Beauties and the Queen's quarters, both worth seeing. - Due to the rain, we first visited the Carriage Museum, which showcases royal carriages and various decorations. It was my first time seeing royal carriages, and they were truly luxurious and grand, very different from ordinary carriages. However, I preferred the design of the winter sleds, which were very intricate. - Finally, when the weather cleared up, we walked through the palace gardens. The garden is quite large with fountains, and you can pay for a boat ride on the lake. But I was more interested in visiting a pavilion called The Pagodenburg Pavilion. According to the guide, it's designed like a Chinese pagoda, with the first floor decorated with Dutch blue tiles and the second floor with Chinese painted screens. The local guide mentioned that in the past, traveling to Eastern countries was only possible by sea, so having Eastern decorations at home was very precious and a way for the wealthy to show off. A tip for everyone: be careful while walking in the garden as you might step on bird droppings scattered around :)
