The road is narrow and you have to move in both directions, so be careful! Although the security is relatively good, you have to be especially careful of pickpockets and not fall. Most spots can only fit a handful of people, which makes it cozy and chaotic all at once. Grab a stool, order some yakitori (grilled chicken skewers), sip on a cold beer or sake, and just vibe. Don’t expect fancy menus, just good food, cheap drinks, and random convos with strangers. It’s smoky, loud, and super tight on space, but that’s all part of the charm. Come hungry, bring cash, and leave full.

One of the izakayas in Omoide Yokocho is called Yasubei Bekkan. This is the annex, and the main building is nearby. It is already famous among foreigners, so this alley was filled with foreign tourists rather than locals. Even though we went on a Thursday evening, there were hardly any empty seats, and the small transparent cans of sake were pretty, so we waited a bit and went in. This restaurant had a higher percentage of locals than other restaurants. We went in after seeing the pretty cans of sake, but when we saw the draft beer being drunk at other tables, we automatically ordered Asahi draft beer as well, which was also very smooth and refreshing. Since it was one menu and one drink per person, we ordered two glasses of beer, an oden set, and an udon. It came to 4,070 yen including the seat charge. It was less sweet than we expected for oden, but the texture of the various oden was unique and delicious. The udon was smaller than we thought, and the oden had the same broth. The weather was a bit chilly, so it was a perfect snack. The sake cans were also pretty and unique because they were all different. I usually thought sake would be in fancy bottles, but it felt much more familiar because it was in cans with various Japanese designs. But when I think of Japan, I think of Asahi draft beer.
