Lanyu camping for four days and three nights
This is the second time I have come to Lanyu for camping. The last time was three years ago. Every time we choose to take a boat from Houbi Lake in Kenting to Lanyu. The single boat trip takes about 2.5 hours, but it depends on the wind and wave conditions of the day. We are afraid of seasickness, so we take seasickness pills before boarding the boat, and then go to sleep as soon as we get on the boat. We definitely don’t eat too much before boarding the boat, especially sweets are taboo!
Because we chose to take the first boat at 7:00 in the morning, we stayed in Houbi Lake the night before, so we could go directly to Houbi Lake to take the boat the next morning. The car can be parked directly in the parking lot of Houbihu Pier or on the roadside.
【Transportation to Orchid Island】
1. Take a plane from Taitung (a small plane with 19 seats)
2. Take a boat from Taitung Fugang Pier
3. Take a boat from Kenting Houbihu Pier
This time I decided to go to Orchid Island in mid-February. Since I have been to Orchid Island for camping before, I decided to camp this time to save on accommodation. It is difficult to book accommodation during the long holidays, and the room rates are not cheap! After calling the camp to inquire and confirming that there were camping spots available, and after the boat tickets to Lanyu were also confirmed, the trip was truly set. The only means of transportation on Lanyu Island is motorcycles, so when we rented a motorcycle, we asked the owner, Brother Hu, to reserve two for us. After getting off the ship on the same day, you can go directly to the car rental company to pick up the car and pay. For large luggage, some car rental companies provide small trucks waiting for guests at the dock, and then deliver them directly to various homestays or camps for guests. It is super convenient and you don’t have to carry it yourself! The same is true when taking the return boat. They will arrive at the camp in advance to help with the luggage to the dock.
[Introduction to Lanyu]
The Lanyu Ring Road is 37km long and has a total of six tribes. There are three tribes in the front mountain, which is the port and airport side: Coconut Oil, Fisherman, and Red Head. There are also three tribes in the back mountain: Langdao, Dongqing, and Yeyin. In addition to the Ring Island Highway, there is also a Central Cross-Island Highway, which can be used to ride directly from the Hongtou Tribe to the Yesin Tribe. However, because the mountain road was very steep, when we arrived, it had rained heavily two days before and the road was slippery, so we were worried about danger, so we just rode the ring road.
[Camp Introduction]
The Sun Viewing Camping Area we stayed in this time was in the Yeyin Tribe. We stayed in the same camping area last time, so we were very familiar with it. The campsite is small and beautiful, and it is a grass campsite. The sun-viewing camping area is not a professional camping area. There are no lines or pallets. The space may not be comparable to that of the main island of Taiwan, but we are already very satisfied. Strictly speaking, it is the camper's own home, and he opens his own yard to everyone for camping. The entire yard is L-shaped and can only accommodate about 5-6 tents of 300*300, and it is really just a sleeping tent. There is not much other space for children to run around. Last time we went there, we met a lot of foreigners and backpackers, all of whom were setting up tents for 1-2 people, so if they were that type, we could set up more tents. However, we wouldn’t know how many tents we would have until the day of camping, so when communicating with the camp owner, Brother Hu, we had to clearly state how many people we would be and the approximate size of the tent so that he could make arrangements.
The owner's house has a simple kitchen with a gas stove and bathroom facilities. This time when I went there, Brother Hu had greatly upgraded it. He built several new toilets and bathrooms, so it is very spacious, clean and comfortable. There are also some wooden tables and chairs, stone chairs, and a pavilion for daydreaming, which is super cozy.
The camp owner also has two dogs, a black one and a yellow one. The last time we came, the yellow one was a baby and was super lively and cute, running around all over the place. My sister misses the yellow one so much and often says she wants to go back to Lanyu to find the yellow one. I wonder if the yellow one still remembers us this time and is still as friendly as before. Every day when we return to the camping area, my sister will go find the yellow one to touch and play with him! I was very reluctant to leave at last.

[Camping Equipment]
After all, the journey to the island is long and we have to take a boat, so our family packed light. We thought the camp owner had a table and chairs and I also had a suitcase that could be used as a table temporarily. We only brought a tent (including a floor mat), four Q-trace sleeping bags, three single thin sleeping mats, two pillows, a camp bed and an N9 camping light. We didn't bring anything else. We asked Brother Hu in advance about the extension cord, and he said we didn't bring it, so we made a huge mistake by not bringing the camp nails. We asked Brother Hu to borrow some directly, and he took out Lanyu's unique version of steel nail strips, and even put in environmentally friendly plastic bottle covers to prevent children from kicking them. We brought two suitcases on this trip, one is a 27-inch Ares suitcase, and the other is a 27-inch Travel Fun Alien Fat Suitcase, plus a large equipment bag (which contained swimwear for the whole family, three life jackets, a snorkeling mask for my sister, and sports sandals). Each person has a simple carry-on backpack. Because I don’t want to cook, I just want to eat out and keep things simple, and have fun to the fullest!
