The Otago Peninsula is home to a wealth of wildlife that is easy to see up close and a must-see on many travel routes. In addition to watching wildlife such as penguins, albatrosses, fur seals and sea lions, you can also enjoy mountain scenery and historical monuments. Taiaroa Head, on the east side of the peninsula, has a terrestrial albatross colony. The viewing time is from December to February of the following year. At this time, one parent takes care of the chicks all the time, and the other goes out for food all day and returns. The blue penguin viewing spot is Pilots Beach, just below the Albatross Centre car park. Before night falls, the penguins come ashore to rest for a while. Walk down the gravel road from the car park to a viewing area near the beach, where you can stay and watch until they all return to their nests.
