Perugia: the charming ancient capital of an ancient medieval city
#2024Travel Review
When the high-speed train drove from Rome to Perugia, my heart was full of expectations. This ancient medieval city has always been one of my dream travel destinations. The train gradually pulled into the station, and I couldn't wait to get out of the carriage and start exploring this fascinating city.
The first thing that caught my eye was the ancient and magnificent architectural style of Perugia. The castle on the cliff in the center of the city is so majestic that it seems to overlook the entire city at any time. I walked up the winding path, admiring the majestic medieval churches and palaces along the way. These buildings all exude a long historical charm, making me feel like I have traveled through time and space and been in another century.
After leaving the castle area, I came to the most famous attraction in Perugia - Madame de Prasano market. This lively open-air market seems to be the main artery of the city, gathering the enthusiasm and vitality of locals and tourists.
I was immersed in the cries and lively atmosphere of many vendors, and my eyes wandered among the dazzling array of products. All kinds of fresh agricultural products, fragrant spices, and exquisite handicrafts all attracted my attention. I couldn't help but walk closer to each stall, admiring and tasting the food carefully. From the fragrant and delicate pecorino cheese to the spicy pepperoni, every delicacy made my taste buds intoxicated.
In addition to delicious food, I also found that this place is full of surprises with handicrafts. The ceramic vessels, weavings and jewelry crafted by local craftsmen are all stunning. I couldn't help but make a big purchase, ready to take these charming souvenirs home to share with my family and friends.
Escaping from the bustling market, I came to another unique landscape in Perugia - the Métis Youth University. This university campus, converted from a medieval monastery, exudes a strong classical academic atmosphere, both in appearance and interior.
I walked through the labyrinth of paths on campus, marveling at the exquisite decoration of each building. The gushing springs, stone arcades, and green courtyards all exude a leisurely atmosphere of free exploration. I couldn't help but chat with the students I met and discuss the local history and culture. They enthusiastically introduced to me the school’s long tradition and famous academic achievements, which made me admire the cultural heritage of this city.
In this strong academic atmosphere, I felt the unique temperament of Perugia - ancient yet dynamic, traditional yet full of innovation. This city makes me yearn to be able to show my talents in the palace of pursuing knowledge.
After leaving Métis Youth University, I followed the winding path to the New Museum of Fine Arts in the center of the city. The building's modern appearance is incompatible with the surrounding medieval buildings, but it cleverly integrates into the overall pattern of the city.
As soon as I stepped into the art museum, I was immediately shocked by the avant-garde artworks in front of me. From bold and avant-garde installations to delicate paintings, each piece of art inspires my imagination and aesthetic sense. I am immersed in the artistic conception of the works and feel their depth of insight into human nature and reflection on society.
While appreciating the art, I was also attracted by the design of the building itself. Smooth lines, open space, and rich layers of light and shadow all demonstrate the architect's outstanding craftsmanship. The integration of this building with the city's ancient architecture has injected new cultural vitality into Perugia, making it an ideal place to quietly appreciate works of art.
As a city with a long history, Perugia naturally also has many archaeological remains. I decided to explore one of the high-profile Etruscan catacombs.
Walking underground along the winding stairs, I was immediately surrounded by cool air and a strong sense of history. The exquisitely decorated sarcophagus tombs are neatly arranged in the dark corridor, exuding a mysterious and ancient atmosphere. I carefully looked at the reliefs and murals on each coffin, imagining who these relics once belonged to.
In this dark and ancient underground space, I couldn't help but ponder the history of this city. From the Etruscan civilization to the Roman Empire and the Middle Ages, each era has left a unique mark on this land. I feel as if I have established an eternal connection with past human civilizations. This indescribable touch is unforgettable.
After exploring the history and culture of Perugia, I decided to have a comfortable and leisurely coffee time to experience the life of this city more deeply.
I came to the famous cafe in the city center, sat on a small and exquisite outdoor seat, and looked at the bustling crowd around me. The baristas here are all masters of coffee cooking. They skillfully brew rich and mellow coffee with a charming aroma. After one sip, the smooth texture and slight bitterness perfectly ignited my taste buds.
While tasting the delicious coffee, I also observed the daily life here. Locals sit leisurely on the outdoor seats, chatting and occasionally laughing while drinking coffee. This relaxing atmosphere infected me, making me forget the passage of time and immerse myself in this peace.
Towards the end of my exploration of Perugia, I decided to visit the city’s most famous art treasure trove, the Alto. There are many precious art treasures gathered here, which makes me eager to try them.
Climbing the winding hillside, I first came to the National Gallery of Art. The building itself is an artistic treasure. Its exquisite appearance and grandeur seem to indicate to the world the priceless treasures it contains. Stepping into the museum, I was shocked by the art in front of me - exquisite paintings, sculptures and decorative crafts, all of which illustrate the city's artistic tradition. I admired each work carefully and was moved by the cultural connotation contained in it time and time again.
After leaving the art gallery, I followed the quiet path to the main church in the upper town. This medieval Gothic building is heart-stopping, with its majestic appearance and colorful interior decorations, perfectly blending elements of religion and art. I immersed myself inside for a long time, admiring the sanctity and elegance of every carving and mural.
After visiting many cultural attractions in Perugia, I finally came to a boutique in the city center, ready to buy some souvenirs as a souvenir of my trip.
The shop owner enthusiastically introduced me to a variety of local specialty products, ranging from exquisite ceramics to exquisite weavings. I carefully selected some favorite items, including a delicate hand-embroidered scarf and several ceramic ornaments. The shop owner helped me wrap it carefully and gave me some small gifts, which made me feel warmer.
Holding a package full of souvenirs, I reluctantly left this charming city. Perugia left a deep and unforgettable impression on me - the perfect fusion of ancient and modern, the infinite charm of culture and art, and the unforgettable life experience. I believe these precious memories and souvenirs will become precious treasures that I will cherish forever.
