Tour of small towns near Pienza: Pienza
📍Pienza, one of the small cities in Tuscany
🚘About 1 hour by car from Siena
▫️It feels like you're on a medieval movie set!
▫️It's said that the town called Corsignano was changed to Pienza by Pope Pius II.
🏰Piccolomini Palace
▫️It was built in the Renaissance style in the 15th century, where Pope Pius II (Enea Silvio Piccolomini) was born. It's said that descendants of the Piccolomini family actually lived there until the 1960s.
▫️The filming location for the 1968 film (Juliet's House) is this Piccolomini Palace.
There is a wall decorated with movie cameras in the palace, and you can see stills from Olivia Hussey's movie.
📝There are restaurants and cafes that are not open for lunch, like Siesta. I arrived when it was hot and wanted to fill my stomach at a restaurant or rest a bit at a cafe, but there were no places open, so I first looked around the Piccolomini Palace and walked around until the shops opened. Use this as a reference when planning your itinerary!
▫️There are also places that offer accommodations, so it might be a good idea to stay one night if you get the chance.
▫️Pienza seems to be famous for its sunflower fields, so there were a lot of products that had a PienzaXSunflower collaboration(?) at the place I went to buy souvenirs. After coming here, whenever I see sunflowers, Pienza comes to mind first.
