Hello, today I will share a story from a small city in France, Avignon. Thai people may not know much about this city, but we went there because we joined their summer theater festival. Avignon is an old city where we went. They don’t allow renovations on the outside, but the inside of the houses can be renovated to preserve the original style of art and architecture. It looks like a period movie from Europe. This theater festival is held for a whole month in the old city. The city map is in Figure 13. The blue dots are all the theaters, both small and large. There are also theaters outside the old city because there are so many theaters that they can’t fit in the space in the city. In a month, there are 1,600 theaters in total, both inside and outside the city, in theaters and on the streets. Let me tell you a little bit about the importance of this city. In the past, this city was an important city for Christianity. It was the residence of many Popes and is still one of the few cities in France that still has its city walls. That means you can still visit the city even without the theater festival. Let me continue with the theater festival here. Before the festival starts, there is a deadline to put up posters after 10 pm. The festival requires that paper be made from environmentally friendly materials. Some of our posters were printed from Thailand, but we couldn't put up those posters because we don't have environmentally friendly paper and ink. When it was almost 10 pm, we saw everyone from every theater group competing for the best spot to promote their work. It felt like the sports day in high school. They were riding on each other's shoulders to put up posters. We put up until 2 am and then thought that was enough. When you come to France, you have to eat Ratatouille. This is made by the theater owner's wife. It's homemade. The best thing to eat when you come here is wine. They say it's cheaper than plain water. It's not an exaggeration. The cheapest is 1.8 euros, but the taste is a bit hard to drink. I recommend the 5 euros price, which is really good. And you have to eat it with cheese. For those who like cheese, there are a lot of blue cheeses. Just random cheeses. How to get there: You can land in Lyon and take the train. Or you can go to another city. As for me, I landed in Geneva, Switzerland, and took the train because the ticket was cheaper. Recommended food: None because I cook it myself every day. There are supermarkets in the city and Asian stores outside the city. The restaurants are a bit more expensive. Avignon, located on the left bank of the Rhône River, was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 and voted as the European Capital of Culture in 2000. Traveling from Paris by TGV takes approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes, making it very convenient! (You only need to pick up your ticket 30 minutes before departure, as the gates open at that time. Be sure to board the correct carriage, as carriages are not interconnected.) We spent 5 hours there, taking a bus to the Palais des Papes. It’s truly grand and beautiful, but due to limited time, we could only admire it from the outside. Avignon is a very walkable city, where you can explore all the attractions on foot. Many museums also offer free admission! The city is surrounded by layers of walls, and you can find many Roman-era ruins here. The museums also showcase artifacts from that period! It’s a city I truly love. However, do pay attention to the bus schedule (buses run every 30 minutes). In a rush, I ended up taking an Uber, which cost me the most expensive ride of my life—7 minutes for 609 TWD! Still, it’s definitely worth visiting! Just note that the area near the train station can be a bit chaotic.

Bring a warm jacket for the chilly evening air, and don’t miss tasting the local wines—rich, full-bodied, and perfect for the setting.
